    Hiker Rescued from Mt Moosilauke

On the surface it would seem she activated the PLB with out actually being in a true emergency. If that is the case, shame on her. With out knowing all the details of the emergency it is hard to pass judgement.:confused:It is entirely possible she broke her snow shoe at 11:00 am and had...

    Silk vs. Other Warm Stuff

What? uncomfortable texture ? soft as silk is a lie ? :D I have to both agree and DISagree with the above posters I would avoid the thicker silk sweaters (they will stay wet) to replace your fleece but I would have no fear in adding the thinner silk to my winter layering...

    So. NH Conditions?

Trails are all in great shape, some small mud spots here and there but nothing to worry about. No ice or snow anywhere, maybe a frozen puddle or two early in the a.m. I live 10 minutes from the Mountain and hike it with the dogs at least weekly sometimes twice(was there yesterday). If you...

    Anti-Bott Plates for Crampons

I second paul ron's use of kydex, I also use it with excellent results. I have a buddy who uses one of those cheap blue plastic roll up snow sleds that you can buy for around 5 bucks, enough material to last you for years. I glue mine on with shoe goo and the very thin picture hanging wire and...

    TrailNote leave a plan!

Hey all, I did a quick search and found no mention of this:http://www.trailnote.com/index.cfm Seems like a worth while idea to me. I do SAR , spend a lot of time solo and regularly lead groups. It is just one more way to stay safe. Worth checking out.

    clouds=elephants?!

Actually while shoveling snow I use the chicken factor x 3.14. The standard snow shovel being 18"x14" x Chicken x Snow Density x 3.14 = Henway really it is just basic algebra:eek:

A helicopter has never found anyone on any of the searchs I have been on, for that matter 99.9 of the searches I have been on I have not been the one to find someone either. That said helicopters besides eliminating large search areas are a "feel Good" item while on the search...

    harness recommendation

Anything from BD or Petzl, Mammut, Arc'teryx, etc, etc will suit you fine. The thing with climbing harness is they can be a bit like shoes.....what is great to me may completely suck for you...So try a few on, better yet go to a gym and rent/try out a few different ones. As a new climber dont...

    emergency bivy ?

YES! The bivy shelter Never actually used as intended, but I have used it several times as a rain/wind cover on a litter during carry outs. I know for a fact it will keep you dry. It is about half the size/weight of the Outdoor Research Bivy sack I used to carry for the same purpose.

    emergency bivy ?

Got to admit I really like the Blizzard, Im going to have to get one for my pack. I have been carrying a Bivy Shelter from Wild Things in my SAR pack. I like it packs really small about the size of a beer can and weighs about the same.(though I have no actual experience carrying beer in my...

    Liquid Benedril Caplets

I carry the benadryll dissolving strips.(like the listerine Breath strips). In my first aid kit. Same concept, Instantly in you system, pack small, more durable, and no gell caps to cut open. The down side is they taste like lizard vomit but I am sure the caps taste worse...

In summer conditions I will generally go way off trail dig a little hole and let'r'fly. I also happen to use biodegradable T.P. wipes supposed to dissolve after 21 days.....admittedly I have never gone back to check, So this may just be very expensive butt wipes..... In the winter time I...

    Environmentally Friendly Mosquito Repellent Coming?

Seems to me there are plenty of enviromentally friendly insect repellants on the market that work very well, with out the use of DEET. Cintranella based products work well as do the lemon eucalyptus based products. I personally give two big thumbs up to Repel Lemon Eucalyptus insect repellant...
