BP, I'll wave and give you a thumbs up from the Israel Ridge / Jefferson area. Early congrats on your 48, and the best of luck on your move out west!

    How far do you drive?

For the Whites any where from 3.3 to 5 hours depending on where in the Whites. Locally the Berkshires are 1-2 hours depending on just where. This past year was a "low milage" hiking year with work, but as the cooler weather approaches, projects completed, the miles will pile back on. Most...

Jefferson via Castle Ravine - 7/31/05

A timely post and great pictures Dave! I'm heading up to the Northerns next week for a few days and was considering Castle Ravine and the Castle trail as well as Israel Ridge. Down the ridge probably, but the up trail will be a tuff decision now. Just something about the lesser used...

Twins, Galehead, Hale, Good to be back in the Saddle!!

After a long absence from up north due to an extended project, it was good to get out with my buddy Bill last weekend! 7/23. Normally i wouldn't post a pretty standard trip but it felt good to get back up to the special place we all call the Whites. After a quiet night at Sugarloaf we did an...

Acadia National Park, 6-27 to 6-28

If your looking to "Camp" the best place on the island (IMHO:-)) is the Mt Desert Campground at the tip/origin of Somes Sound. Great sites, tenting oriented. They allow no RV over 20' which is awfull small and there are only a handfull of sites they can use. Its right on the sound with many...

Acadia National Park, 6-27 to 6-28

Ahhh Acadia!!! I've been going there for the past 20+ years and never tire of the unique hiking opportunities there. There is just something special about the area, being able to be above the trees with great views for so long, the ponds and lakes, the great variety of trails, forests, and...

    Thinking of Winter......

Oddly enough Dave, that's what got me interested in BC skiing. For the past couple of years a business buddy of mine has invited me XC skiing probably twice a season. I had one day of instruction but i may take your advice and get a bit more. Thanks for the book list. It's probably on your...

    Thinking of Winter......

As usual you guys have been a great help!! Thank You!! The Skis and mounted bindings are on their way. Outta's and the Voile Cable's will get me started. The first pair of T4's were small so i've gotta size up and try the next size. The Scarpa's seem to run small after conversion. So looks...

My Better Half and Lowes Path???

Well folks, we did Techumse from Tripoli Saturday as a warm up for Sunday. The day went OK but the humidity was giving her a hard time. With the heat and humidity headed for higher numbers on Sunday, i decided that Adams would not be the best place to take her. I do after all want her to...

How Do You Keep In Shape For Hiking?

We have 3 Viszlas (hungarian pointers) so plenty of walking in the woods nearby. I'm about a half hour from any real "Hiking" but do have one nice route that is pretty rugged. It's 7 miles of PUD's out (7 Sisters) and back with 3,200' of climbing. I mountain bike, used to road cycle and race...

My Better Half and Lowes Path???

It's the time of year when my much better half comes hiking with me to do her Annual 4K. The past 3 years she's done....The classic ridge walk, up FW across and down OBP, Tom and Field (bad weather), and last year Crawford up and back Pierce and Ike. I'm thinking about Lowes this year to Adams...

    Thinking of Winter......

Thank you both.. I'm definately going with the Voile Bindings, and will do some boot shopping. My feet are a hard fit but may Garmont Flash lightweight boots do fit like a glove! Hopefully my getting the skis won't put a Snowless Winter Curse on us!!

    Thinking of Winter......

I've wanted to get a pair of BC skiis for a while now and have decided now is the time to get going. There have been a number of threads that i've followed, i took notice on the trails this winter, and of course have checked the Mfg sites. Those of you in the know, am i on the right track with...

    Keen Sandals?

I have a pair of the heavy duty ones. Comfy, supportive, and they protect my tootsies from getting banged and scraped on the rocks. Pretty good soles too, fairly "sticky" on rocks. They are a bit heavy but i'll bring them along this season for sure for crossings and lounging at camp. Maybe...

    going solo

Certainly not much i can add here! I've been hiking and packing solo for years. Not all the time but quite often. Usually out of need as my work responsibilities often conflict. I've always enjoyed those times alone! It brings about a greater awareness and enjoyment of the "simpler things"...

    Winter Sleeping pad choice

I use a 2 pad system in deep winter. Thermarest Ultralight and a Z-Rest, works well to well below zero. On dayhikes i always have the Z-rest.

M - M Trail From Mt Holyoke To Bare Mtn Trail Condition ?

Pretty much what Duggan mentioned. My weekly wed afternoon trip out and back from the notch shows a mixed bag. Traction devices would be advised.
