    Old Man of the Mountain

A non-traditional viewpoint. Taken from the top of the Old Man's head. Note the ring bolts and cables holding the rocks together. JohnL

Sounds you love in the woods

Bare trees rubbing together in strong winds. My parka hood flapping against my ears when the wind is howling. A spruce grouse exploding out of the snow. The squeak of very cold snow under my boots. The bass drum in my ears that is my heart. The sound of water running when it's 10 below. The...

    Photo Assignment ... September

Well, that certainly has more crispness in it than my attempts. Nice! I am using the editing sfw that came with my Canon, ArcSoft PhotoStudio5.5. I know, I know. Get something real. I'm working on it. :( JohnL

    Photo Assignment ... September

No, you described it correctly and that is what I did. Here is what the image looks like with 100% Red then directly converting to B/W: Yes, Adams' image of Monolith, Half Dome was shot with a deep red filter. Interestingly enough he used the last of his 12 glass plates that day for that...

    Photo Assignment ... September

Don't mind a little help at all with editing. I'm a novice when it comes to the editing and I only do some basic adjustments to my photos. I tried what you said but the foreground and mesa came out quite bright in the conversion as they are red sandstone as you can see. The image was taken...

    Photo Assignment ... September

Spearhead Mesa, Monument Valley This image converted quite nicely to b&w simply by sliding the saturation level to zero. That was it. JohnL

    monopod or IS ?

I cannot commnet on IS since I have never used it but with a 3+ lb lens, you're either going to spend $600 on IS or about $400 on a solid tripod. What the monopod lacks in stability it makes up for it in versatility. Pick your poison. I also would recommend B&H. JohnL

    Vittorio Sella Exhibit in Boston

Thanks for the reminder. I had seen an ad for this not long ago but had just as quickly forgotten about it. I had viewed a selection of his work that was co-displayed with some Brad Washburn prints about 5 years ago. My sometimes faulty memory believes it was at the Highland Center. A short...

    workout or rest?

I’m not so sure it would be easy to figure out what is holding you back from the limited information you have given but I would also agree that you should look at your diet and sleeping patterns. I’d also ask how long you have been working out and what you do while working out, as well as what...

    Acres of Sunflowers

What's that little blue flower doing in there? :D Great images! It appears that the entire state of Maryland has been taken over by sunflowers. I suddenly have a hankerin' for some sunflower seeds. Thanks for sharing. JohnL

    Another moose up close

While coming down the Georgiana Falls trail on Sunday, I had a close encounter with a young cow moose. I had noticed several scat piles along the trail so I knew moose were prevalent in the area. I was just walking along, watching my footing. I just happened to look up and there she was...

    Photography courses/books/resources

While I also am a big fan of Galen Rowell’s work and I have several of his books, you can certainly be intimidated by not only the technical quality of his photos but you can be over-awed by the scenery and lose track of the fundamentals of what he is trying to tell you. Every photo you see in...

    Samsung TL500/EX1 first shots

I like the post office image but it lacks light. Bright light. I assume you intend it to be a study in B&W but what you have is varying shades of gray due to the lack of light. The upper corners fade away and I think you lose something there and the bottom needs cropping. It sounds like I'm...

Chomp, Congratulations! You've got some outstanding images there. What a great experience and nice accomplishment! Too bad the weather was so-so! ;) Your summit photo (#143) was reminiscent of your summit pose on South Brother a few years back. JohnL
