    Moose on Mt. Washington

Patrick, I am green with envy. Not just for the photos but for the mere experience. Thanks for sharing the images and the imagined feelings we would have had if we were there. JohnL

What's on your feet? (Three-season hiking footwear)

I started wearing the low cut trail shoes exclusively in my early 50's and continue to do so. At 55 I did a S-N Presi Traverse plus Isolation (30+ miles) with low shoes. Feet were fine. All my regular hiking partners all wear low shoes. None are 20-somethings. We are all fitter than most...

Yesterday I found a large patch of Wild Mint amongst the tall grass in a local bog. The aroma was delightful and refreshing. Nearby were some Elderberries, which were very tasty. JohnL

Mountains in the clouds -- comments please

Yes, definitely the Eiger (you can clearly see the Exit Cracks leading up and diagonally left from the White Spider) and yes, number 4 has the most potential as the 'best' shot, however you may want to define it. I took the liberty of cropping it and this is one way in which I would crop it...

NW passage (attempt) ship found 150 years later

Interesting that some members of the Franklin expedition suffered from the effects of scurvy despite having 4200 kilograms of lemon juice on board the Erebus and the Terror. Several searches of sources of vitamin C did not mention fish at all but another search mentioned caribou meat (an Inuit...

The orchids look other-worldly. Very nice! Nice bee shots also. They do tend to make things difficult by jiggling the flowers. From early this morning: Evening Primrose JohnL

John, Don't apologize for any perceived lack of knowledge. We all start at the same place in our quest for knowledge. I've had to make several corrections on this thread for flowers I have mis-identified so all of us are still learning. The more I learn, the more I realize what I don't know...

    Solo Peakbagging %s

That would be your opinion unless there is a written and sanctioned document outlining the exact requirements for a solo hike. ;) Okay, so I'll play along. Here are some questions that would need to be answered so people know what the detailed requirements would be. 1. If I hike up a trail...

    Solo Peakbagging %s

To me, saying you cannot count a hike as being solo in the winter because someone broke trail ahead of you is analagous to saying you cannot count a hike on the Crawford Path because Abel Crawford broke and cut the trail ahead of you. Really? Maybe we should not count any of the early Spring...
