6.5 Mi Breaking Trail in 4ft deep snow!

It is great when you can squeeze in some mountain solitude in-town after a big storm that scares everyone into their homes. Magical!

    Winter Pemi-Loop

I know of this guy who just did it this weekend. He didn't post a TR anywhere that I know of so I don't know if it is real or not. Said he did in 14hrs or something... ;)

How to strain water when filling a Platypus?

Maybe one of these? Although the filter is not too small, it would get most of the big dirt. http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___87964 And what about just getting a bandanna and stuffing part of it into the platypus hole and pouring into the hole like you would if you only had a...

    Thinking About the Enchantments

I agree with you and Stinky! The N Cascades are really where the ruggedness lies. But Leavenworth and the area are also such a cool place! With friends visiting I always made it a point to take them to both, doing the long loop through the N Cascades HW, old Western Winthrop, the WA desert, and...

    Thinking About the Enchantments

The Green Trails maps are just fine. They are 15' minute maps so not as detailed as the big 7.5? USGS maps but they still have enough detail, have trails outlined and are smaller. They also have other info printed on the back of the map, like trail info (#, name, from-to, mi), campground info...

    Thinking About the Enchantments

I haven't camped out there but I've been through it. (1) How big is the risk of thunderstorms in July/August? Low. The Cascades don't usually get thunderstorms. If there are any, that is completely out of the norm. Summer is dry and sunny. (2) How long is the road walk between the "Snow Lakes...

Hiker OK After Getting Stuck On Mount Moosilauke

Nice! Sometimes unplanned benightings happen. I've had a 30min descent turn into an 8hr descent because of darkness and unforeseen circumstances. Glad you came out ok and "enjoyed" the experience.

    Tahawus road & car issues

Ha! nice catch. Fixed. It WAS reasonable, trust me! :D This wasn't my turn but here is someone else coming-along a v-thread to failure manually. The readings being spoken are from the load cell we have attached: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGIhCJns2Bs

    Tahawus road & car issues

A come-along with a steel cable (ie. like used on winches), one pulley, and some extra biners just in case can come in very handy. Using a setup like that with some mechanical advantage, like a 2:1 with that one pulley, I've pulled up to 4000lbs with reasonable effort. It's good to have if you...

    AT/Rondonee question

It's not that you can't. One certainly could kick wax their AT skis. Although purely from anecdotal evidence, most AT skiers I have seen do a big up followed by a big down and it is just easier to have the skins on for the whole way up. I think if what a skier is interested in is mostly flats or...

    AT/Rondonee question

I think there might be some confusion in the terminology here - ie BC vs AT vs Alpine (downhill) This it an AT binding: http://cdn.overstock.com/images/products/P12375879.jpg AT gear is definitively lighter than Alpine downhill gear. But heavier than BC. And there is no need to wax an AT ski...
