    Cheap avy probe?

I think Chip's right - no way you'd find an new avy probe for that much. Quick search on Ebay shows this: http://cgi.ebay.com/SURVIVAL-ON-SNOW-POLE-SOS-Standard-2-8-Avalanche-Probe_W0QQitemZ380173674830QQcmdZViewItemQQptZSnowboarding?hash=item58841de94e ...still lots of $$ for shipping.

Hey Skiers! Most bang for the buck - Backcountry Gear

You're right SN, this practice is not something condoned by Fritschi. I am guessing probably since the boots won't release at the toe as easily as a ski boot. I have not tried setting the DIN at the lowest and seeing how it releases laterally with my La Sportivas. In any case, they can be setup...

;) Just want to also note that the Fritschi AT binding can also be used with mountaineering boots.

Hey Skiers! Most bang for the buck - Backcountry Gear

I'd just get some kid skis used at some swap cheap. Doesn't have to be too long or else it will be just too much to control with a climbing boot. Then I'd search for some Silvretta 404s or 500s used and get some skins (you could even cut one full length skin for each, maybe) to use with those...

    Steve House: Beyond the Mountain

The Messners did do the FA of the Rupal Face. The House-Anderson is a new line on the Rupal Face that does join the Messner line very high up. It is a FA and it is definitively the first alpine-style ascent of the face and a mountain of that height.

    Rescuers fear "Yuppie 911"

I'm sure we'll have at least a few of these "fake" rescue calls using plbs every year. Unfortunately what we can't track are the users who have them, got themselves in a situation where "things got difficult" and decided to self-rescue. Having said that, I'm not sure I would even like trusting...

Hawaiian air does not take stoves!

The Hawaiian FAQ section question about permitted items links directly to the TSA site, where the section on Camping items states: "Camp Stoves - These can travel as carry-on or checked luggage only if they are empty of all fuel and cleaned so that there are no vapors or residue left. Simply...

    Hip replacement surgery

A friend of mine, retired teacher in his 60s, had his initial hip replacement and said his skiing improved a lot because of it. He just had his second hip replacement done and is still recovering but I doubt he'll be sitting for long. He is a climbing guide and ski instructor. Good luck and have...

    harness recommendation

Chip, I don't think there's a right or a wrong in any case, but if you're looking at the numbers, the Alpine Bod and the Momentum weigh the same. But, here are some reasons I like having a belay loop: 1) faster and more convenient to switch to/from a belay -not having to thread a biner through...

Hawaiian air does not take stoves!

Real bummer about the stove, but I think it is not just Hawaiian. A quick look and Jetblue also has the same restriction although they mention it has to be used: http://help.jetblue.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/webisapi.dll?New,Kb=askBlue,case=obj%28632%29

Interesting Situation at Baxter: Car Boot

Baxter kicks the llama's ass. No better alpine remoteness and lines in NE. Having said that, I do not like their regulations regarding trips above treeline in the winter and some other pickiness I encountered during a summer trip- ie. "Sorry, you cannot book nights on lean-tos that are more...
