    Denali deaths

I'm going with a guide service (my climbing partner couldn't get away) and they charge $4800, the flight up was $550, $210 for the climbing permit, and another $500 misc. The guide service cost is steep, however, they provide all the food, flight to and from the glacier, and logistics. I'm...

    Denali deaths

Tragic indeed. I fly out on next Friday, to climb Denali. Everything I've read and all the conversaions I've had with others agree with Frodo's description. By the way Frodo, congratulations, your trip report was a great read.

    Isolation Bushwhack on 3/12 Ms. Brown's #48

Thanks to Spider Solo and DougPaul for all of the beta and hard work trail breaking. A friend and I started off from the parking lot around 7:30 Saturday morning saying hi to two others in the parking lot as we left. We followed your tracks across the brook and to the point where Spider Solo...

    Wildcats A - E bushwack

We bushwhacked uphill parallel to the ski trials. We took a compass barring from Square Ledge to D a followed the path of least resistance. We were trying to avoid the ski trails but were happy to see it when we did. The area is not too thick, with the exception near where we came upon the...

    Wildcats A - E bushwack

The bushwack from Square Ledge to D is pretty straight forward. We hit some pretty thick stuff near the 3500' elevation as we came upon a ski trail. We got a lot of looks and ecouragement from the skiers and ski patrol the final 500'. The trip across the ridge to A to was uneventful...

AMC -vs- the snowmobiles (Union Leader article)

Hypocritical Seems hypocritical to me that the AMC would build a facilitly that draws addtional people to an area, that they are now trying to protect. I personally think the the leaders of the AMC should spend more time on mountain tops passing out 4000 footer patches.

    VBL's (Vapor Barrier Liners) Questions

Integral Designs I have used vapor barrier socks with great success the past several winters, especially on overnights. I have tried most VB sock options through the years (bread baggies, Climb High VB socks, ...) with limited to no luck. The Integral Design VB sock is bomb proof and would...

    Lost in Thin Air

Lewis and Clark I agree, the Lewis and Clark reference was a bit extreme, however, I think my point was understood. I have no problems with trail signs, blazes, or carins. However, I do not believe people should depend on these for navigation.

    Lost in Thin Air

Signs!! You've got to be kidding me. Did Lewis and Clark need 'signs'? For that matter, how did any mountains first ascent party ever reach the summit without 'signs' guiding them? If anything we need less signs and more personal responsibility.

    Best dog breeds for hiking?

German Shorthair Pointer, Very smart, very athletic. Jackson has never had any trouble negotiating a trail (Bondcliff, King Ravine, etc...). When ever I've approched a section of the trail which I thought might give him trouble, I look up and there he is waiting for me.

    Cross Pemi Shortcut

Papa Bear, A friend and myself planned a similar trip 3 weeks ago. We headed up from Lincoln Woods across Flume, Liberty, Little Haystack, to Lincoln. The information we had led us to believe that you should avoid the actual slide and head down the ridge from the summit. This turned out to...

    High Altitude Training

Alpine Ascents I followed the Alpine Ascents training program mavs00 refered to for my February 2004 climb of Rainier. I followed their program pretty close (long training hikes with 60 lbs. pack) and cruised up the mountain (awesome weather was a major factor). I plan to follow this program...

    BIG backpacks

Denali Pro I own the Gregory Petit Dru (as mentioned above the same as the Denali Pro only smaller). Simply the best pack (bomber). If you're looking for a pack to carry a large load and are going to use it, not let it sit in a closet, why buy anything else, regardless of the price.

    Drying clothes in winter

Drying clothes To say that I sweat is an understatement (trust me). I've also been backpacking in the winter in the rain (presi traverse). The only way to dry clothes in the winter is to wear them, I can not stress this enough. Your body is the only available source of heat. If you have wet...
