Accuracy of trail distances on signs and in guide books

All I care about is that the distance is correct to within 20% or so. What matters to me, is time, and distance (and elevation) only show a part of that. If all trails were hard packed, and all hills had equal sized steps, maybe I'd care more about distance.

This confuses me. Do you see this? Is this something that replaced the private messages?

The differences of the Whites verses ADKS

I've been in NH the past few days. A few things. The weather. It always rains in NH. I've now done 35of the 48, and only OND day I didn't have rain. That is too high a percentage to be chance. I think I can say, with confidence, there is no sun in the whites. A mathematician will tell...

    Requesting Advice on Winter backpacking

I usually wake up thinking that it is almost morning... You see... later in the winter, you'll find it getting dark at around 4:00. I always am camping alone, so I can't really sit around talking* so I'm in bed by 4:30 or so. It makes for a long night. * I have tried sitting around talking...

Summit signs taken down on the Carters

Iroquois used to have a canister. If you look at the 46ers Canister Poster, you'll see a picture of it. In the late '70s (I think) there was a herd path re-route/rehabilitation, and the canister was removed then, as it wasn't really considered a trailless peak.

Summit signs taken down on the Carters

Not all that many years ago. Less than 10. Initially, the names sent in were verified, but the verification stopped in the '80s when the numbers just made it impractical. It has essentially been an honor system since then, although not obvious to the hiker. Never. In fact, when the canisters...

    Resole Hiking Boots?

Note that one of the things I was implying when I said to talk to places selling boots, is the value of a LOCAL cobbler. Many years ago, I had a pair of boots that I loved. I brought them to a guy for re-soling, and he looked, poked, bent, twisted, etc. Then he told me that it may not be...

    Resole Hiking Boots?

Do you have an EMS, REI, MEC, independent gear store nearby? Talk to someone from the shoe department, and ask them who they recommend. They'll probably tell you about this cobler in a hole-in-the-wall store that does good work.

6th annual Adirondack Gathering and BBQ August 7-10

I have a few commitments in the area that weekend, but will definately try to at least stop by to say, "Hi!". One of my commitments is to Street&Nye, early Saturday morning. If anyone is interested in a guided tour, let me know. I'll make it the toughest easy climb you've ever done.

    Dr Bronners use ?

For the past few weeks, I've been using it to eliminate slugs from my peppers and basil. There's something the same thing can be a shampoo, soap, toothpaste, AND kill slugs! As a mathematician, it makes me think of transitivity, and its implications.

Best system for keeping water warm in winter?

Tom beat me to it. That's exactly the expression on Timmus' face when I offered her a drink. I won't tell you what she said to me though. It's not printable.

Best system for keeping water warm in winter?

Keeping it close to your body. As I mentioned once before, I do it with my camelback. I shove it down my pants to keep it from freezing.

    Backpackable laptops?

These days, most, if not all laptops handle both. Just the plug adapter is all that is needed.

    National Trails Day 2008

Ahhh. I guess I did this year. Usually, the 46ers trailwork days do no coincide with National Trails Day. Usually, we work the weekend before and the weekend after. This year, they match. Probably due to the early memorial day this year. I had a good crew with me doing a blowdown sweep on Dix.

Emergency ID bracelet is a good idea

It's getting more and more popular. One marketing scheme is to scare parents into it. In case their child is kidnapped. Then there is the medical condition marketing theme. The state of California recently made it illegal for an employer to force employees to get one. A few more...

Emergency ID bracelet is a good idea

Be more modern These days, more and more people are starting to get RFID tags implanted. It is the way of the future. Your medical information right there. It won't catch on branches, won't fall off, and never clashes with a style of clothes you may be wearing.

    Avatar Award Nominations

This thread reminded me that it was long past time to change my avatar. The one that's there now... There's a story there. The picture was taken by WalksWithBlackFlies. It was on the summit of Dix.. about 5 years ago. Timmus was new to hiking in the adirondacks, and she was there too...
