    Titanium utensils in cold weather...

Freezers aren't cold enough. I don't know about sporks, but I CAN tell you that if you eat a popsicle at -30, your tongue, upper and lower lip will stick to it.... and it hurts too! And it's worse if you're riding a bicycle at the time.

    That stinks!

I guess I'm lucky there. I'm sort of nose-deaf. Aside from several-day old tuna, there are very few smells that bother me. Maybe that's why, on trailwork, I'm frequently chosen to be part of the privy-move crew.

    ‘List’less hiking

I'm a list guy. I've got 20-30 lists that i'm working on. I do it in the inverted way, however. I climb a peak... well.. just because... Then I look to see what list that peak is on, then I add it to my list of lists. You see, I climb a peak because a I want to climb with a friend, or...

    Mouse attacks

Coreys road is famous for the mice, which get into cars with the same ease as the bears getting bear-bags at Lake Colden.

Mt. Whitney, the Privy on High is no More!

So it wasn't caused by someone eating Mexican food the night before? ..... "Gather up the usual suspects" One has to ask who are "The usual suspects" on a privy job....

Mt. Whitney, the Privy on High is no More!

In early 2005 I was given a wag bag, and there was this sign. http://newmud.comm.uottawa.ca/~pete/whit/mw1.jpg

    I post trip reports because:

You didn't have a choice for me. I rarely write trip reports. There are only two times I will write one. One is if there was something really strange about the trip... running into a ghost, having an 'outer limit' experience on the hike, having extremely unusual weather, or something very out...

    Fun with Poison Ivy

Too bad some of you are bothered by that stuff. So far, it never bothered me. In fact there was one night.... rolling around in it....Well, I don't want to give details, but I wasn't the one that got it.

Bring 'em! Pictures of meals you've cooked

I used to haul insane amount of stuff in with me, and would make all kinds of meals.... before my knees gave out... A few pictures: http://newmud.comm.uottawa.ca/~pete/leanto_food3.jpg http://newmud.comm.uottawa.ca/~pete/leanto_food2.jpg http://newmud.comm.uottawa.ca/~pete/leanto_food1.jpg

What electronics don't belong in Wilderness areas?

Somewhat inverted question, I think. First of all, you can't really prevent somoone from bringing those things in. OK, maybe something big like a boom-box, but there isn't much you can do about the others.... Cell phones, however... there should be nothing to promote their coverage... such...

    Adirondack High Peaks Campsite

Note that the sound is not as bad as it was in the past. I spent 5-6 nights there this summer, and fround it noticeably quieter. I'm wondering if those rumble strips are wearing down.

    Adirondack High Peaks Campsite

These sites are almost always occupied. You may end up camping close to another group. I would not expect to find any kind of privacy at either one. For free, primative camping, you can do better off the South Meadows road. Easier to find a more secluded place. If you want a pay-place, the...

    Adirondack High Peaks Campsite

When you talk about car camping, do mean just camping near the car, or camping at an 'official' place. Do you want a hot shower at the end of the day, or would jumping in a cold stream work? Wat about a leach filled pond? Do you want to wake up and later sit on porcelain, or do you have a...

    cone of silence?

One of the reasons for having a non-GPS area would not be for the experience. It would make the place less accessible. More skills would be required to get in there, and there is a smaller population with these skills. This is reality. Yep! Passed it on my way to Death Valley, where I went to...

    Poll: Blaze Removal in Wilderness

You see? You're thinking about in terms of what's in it for YOU. Think about a wilderness area which is off-limits to man. What happens there, happens there. We can't go in to see. Having, say, a 10 mile square someplace on the planet. What would it mean? Would it be worth it? Or do we...

    Poll: Blaze Removal in Wilderness

No, it's a basic philosophical question. Do I want the forests to be there for my use? Do I want some wilderness to be there for its own sake. It's all how, philosophically one views the world and nature. I am just trying to boil it down into a single question. If I want wilderness, it is...

    Poll: Blaze Removal in Wilderness

IT always comes back to the question. "Do you want wilderness, or do you want an 'extreme' playground." The answer to that question is what draws sides.

    Hikes for my future sherpa?

No particular hike suggestions, but my memories from when my guys were little, was that the hike was only a piece. Camping.... a special desert... Things along the hike... berries... frogs...funny shaped trees and rocks... Don't think 'hike' the way adults do. Think of the day(s).

Peanut butter Not sure I'd want to use that if I had any intentions of camping in bear country.
