  1. The Sikes

    Hancocks

Did the Hancocks 1/21/17. Because of the warmer temps, the snow was softer. Lots of sticking to your microspikes. We took ours off and barebooted until we hit the slides. We opted to go up the north slide first thinking it was going to be tricky getting down because of such soft, slippery...

    Garfield

Knew the day was going to have some snow showers and be windy. Thought Garfield would be nice. We parked at the first parking lot and did the 1.2 miles of road walk to the actual trail. (we did take a mini detour at the gated area before the first bridge because my short term memory is gone...

    New Hampshire Hundred Highest

Didn't mean to be vague was just seeing what people use. I appreciate any input.

    New Hampshire Hundred Highest

Thanks. I already had checked out all of those. :)

Seymour day 1 and Sewards day 2

Seymour starts out level then starts the climb. There was water and mud as you went higher but not too bad. We took our time on the way down so we wouldn't slip. We went and sat the the "rock" just before the summit to enjoy the views. We hiked back out to the car for the hike the next day...
  7. The Sikes

    Colden, Tabletop and Phelps

Didn't know how we would feel trying to put these 3 together but was pleasantly surprised. Was a perfect day. The trip up and over these 3 was not bad. We went in from Meadows Rd. to Lake Arnold and then back to junction going over to Tabletop and Phelps. The worst mud was around Lake Arnold...

    Beyond Peak Capacity In NY

I had Cascade and Porter, Haystack, Blake, Colvin for a short time, Sewards, Seymour, Cliff, Redfield, Street, Nye...lots now that I think of it. It all depends on when you go. Early bird gets the worm. :)

    Gray Marcy and Skylight question

I chickened out and went from Upper Works and ended up tacking on Cliff and Redfield. Thanks.

    Big Slide

Long ago I finished on Big Slide with my other kids but unfortunately the weather that day was, cold and socked in with fresh snow on the ground. Today we were going to have a bluebird day, the kind that hurts the eyes in a good way. We got to the lot around 6:15 and there was already on 3...

    The Dix Range

With the weather cooperating, we headed to the trail head down Elk Lodge Road. (It was early in the day...around 2:00 when we hiked in) Even though the sawhorse was up saying the lot was full, we drove down and found a space. :) On top of finding a space in the lot, we headed out and found the...
  12. The Sikes

Marcy, Skylight, Gray, Cliff and Redfield and Marshall

Our original plan was to hike in from Upper Works to Up Hill Lean to and use that as base for a couple of days. The plans changed as we saw shelters being full on the way up and I didn't want to take a chance. We decided to stop at Colden Dam lean to area...I can't believe we got my favorite...

    Gray Marcy and Skylight question

I have been reading about flooding and possible trail closings...and just wondered if anyone had or knew where to get the most updated info. Is the flooded trail officially closed and what is the best way to do these three as a day hike. Also, can you still bushwhack from Gray to Marcy? (P.S...
  14. The Sikes

    Wright, Algonquin, Iroquios

My other 2 are now 22 and 24 and are working and going to school. I'm trying to get Adam to carve out some time in his busy life to come hike with us. He assures me he will. He prefers to hike with his friends. :( Matthew is trying to beat Beth for finishing so is very motivated. haha...
  15. The Sikes

    Street and Nye

Having done this many years ago, I was remembering all the stickers I got on my legs from these peaks but one of the Rangers said it was much better now. We headed out early as we were trying to beat the rain. Found the "not a marked trail" sign and started our trek. The day started out...
  16. The Sikes

    Wright, Algonquin, Iroquios

Weather was perfect for these 3. We started from Loj. The trail was mostly dry. I was concerned because they had gotten rain the day before but the rock slabs were dry for the most part. We hit Wright first since it was on .4 from the junction. We visited the plane wreckage. Matthew...

    Sawteeth to Lower Wolf Jaw

The weather was perfect...cool breeze, temps lower than the normal hot, skies were blue. We decided to do these instead of the Sewards/Seymour because of the rain both of the previous evenings. The trails were fine...no real mud to speak of (can't believe I said that about NY:)). We went...

    Bear canister

I was thinking of doing the Sewards day 1 and camp at lean to and Seymour next day.
  19. The Sikes

    Bear canister

Are bear canisters required in the Sewards area? I have one and usually use it but it is a small one and am concerned I won't be able to fit all my food in it. Also, last time I hike the Sewards we went up one way and down another. Can't remember names of what we took. Just remember a long...

    Giant and Rocky Ridge

After the Santanoni's yesterday, we decided on Giant and Rocky Ridge. 6/26/16 Why? I don't know...We took the shorter trail (can't remember the name right now...shorter but nice views on the ledges as you go up). It was a warm one. We tried not to go too fast to keep from over heating plus we...
