    New hiking buddy in training

Don't know if this is appropriate to put here but I just wanted to let all our hiking friends know that we had a baby boy on the 18th. His name is Matthew and we've been telling him all about hiking and how much fun he's going to have. Never can start to early you know. We miss hiking with...

Arm's 115 (foiled Rooster Comb attempt)

Congratulations!!!! :o I'm so happy to hear you finally took the plunge. I only wish we could have been there to join you! Hope to get back out there next year and hike with you again!!!! Congratulations!!!

    Alone in the dark...

When I read your post Jay, I laughed. I thought I was the only one that did that as my kids slept blissfully unaware (and I wasn't really sleeping alone. I had my 2 kids next to me). The only exception is I don't feel like I slept like a baby the next day. I can't stand snoring but I think...

    new goals

After we finished the NH 4's, we did NE 4's and Hundred Highest list at the same time. We then went to NY and did the Daks and started the Catskills. I have to say, I loved NY and can't wait to go back. Just wish it weren't so far away. As others have posted, there are many lists out there...

    Bonds advice

I can't carry alot of weight either and when we did the Bonds we wanted to atleast get to enjoy them for more than 5 minutes so we opted for an overnight hike even with the weight issue. My kids were 7 and 9 then if I remember correctly and they couldn't carry the weight either. We managed to...

First Hike in the Whites - Request for Advice

There's so many nice ones, it's hard to choose! Moosilauke does have 360 views and isn't difficult. I love the Franconia Ridge even though it is longer but you're used to that hiking in the ADKs....Bondcliff is one of our favorites but is a long boring walk for the first approx. 5 miles. My...

Yeah, I've hiked there...I just don't remember it.

I don't remember anything from 12...maybe I willingly chose to forget. :o I know my kids already get some of the hikes we did mixed up and they are still young! As for pictures, I tell the kids, it's for me so when I can't hike anymore I can look back and remember the good old...

Mount Rainier - Disappointment Cleaver was NOT a disappointment this time around

Harry just emailed me and told me that you made it and to check out your report!!!! CONGRATULATIONS! I bet you feel so excited and happy that you made it. I knew you could. Maybe some day we'll attempt it but after reading about the jump you had to make, I'm not so sure. I don't care for...

    Sawtooth #5 - a big ADK 100 triple finish.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! :) Now that is something to aspire to. I wonder if I could move a little closer and then convince the kids this would be fun! :p or would that be the other way around?

    Gender differential

I think it depends on the person. Most of my girl friends would never think to go hiking along or with their kids. And backpacking would be out of the question. They say they are scared. They don't care for the outdoors like I do. If I waited for someone to hike with me, other than last...

    Brother, Fort, & Coe loop?

We did Coe first and then headed over. I'd rather go up a slide than down. It was a long day and my husband didn't appreciate looking over to Fort and realizing we had to go there and then back and then down. It was a long day but manageable. Bring enough water. We did it on a very hot day...

Trail Names: Earned, Important, Silly ?

I was real creative when I thought of a screen name...I don't have a trail name as of yet even though my kids give me one each time we are out. For me, a trail name might say something about you or is just fun...I don't know if there is any real rhyme or reason or maybe it's different for each...

    Orienteering - Exeter, NH

Maybe I could use that as an excuse! I am a mother.

How much do you spend on hiking?

I too was under the illusion that hiking was inexpensive. :o but even though I try to be careful, everything I do is times 3 and the kids are growing constantly as much as I try not to think about that. I cut corners where I can. Gas has to be the worst part right now. Don't know how much...

Wish I would have seen this sooner....bummer....I have been wanting to do this for a while. Maybe next time.

    Views and Brews finisher #2

Congratulations to both of you! That is one list I think I'll leave alone. Don't think it would be a good one to do with the kids. :p Slow down HK....You're going to wear yourself out! ;)

    A question if you please.

Thanks for pointing out the dognapping thing. I would not have thought of that! I probably would have tried to coax the dog to come with me and try to find the owner. Being a dog owner myself and not trusting my dog off leash at all...if he did get away, I doubt he would even have a clue...

suggestions for tent camping on water's edge with hiking

Russell Pond (state campground) off Tripoli Road. There is a large pond that has sites right on the water if you can get one. You have to take your car but you can hike Tripyramids, Techumseh....If you don't want to drive, you could walk around the pond....

Free Play in the Woods Before Age 11

I'm glad as a child I went "out to play" and that we didnt' have video games...to tie me to a chair. My kids enjoy going out to play and although I have caved to allowing them to play a little video action, I do limit it because I feel it takes away from their imaginations. We would spend...

    Never again!.......?

The kids never wanted to do the Wilderness Trail again....they hated how long and straight it was...but they were young.....and we have since done it again and they didn't care. Beth's new one is "Couch" although I told her she will probably do it again and not mind....she just had a bad day...
