    How fast do you ascend?

I get up about 1500' per hour, but I get down 4000' feet in 10 minutes by calling SAR.

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

The bill was not an exact number. It was $25,234. http://www.bostonherald.com/news/regional/view.bg?articleid=1185652

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

Here is a thought - what if New Hampshire F&G had called the parents and said "We are really sorry, but our helicopter is out of service for the next 4 days. The only option we have would be to get one from Maine, but that will cost $20,000. Unfortunately, we don't ability to pay for that... "...

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

Alright, I can see this is getting out of hand pretty quickly.. I'm not trying to get anyone upset, but as a New Hampshire-ite, I get really annoyed when someone from south of the border starts saying "you should do this". Massachusetts has an enormous tax burden because of all the services...

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

I strongly disagree. If you are not a New Hampshire resident, this is not an issue. Its a New Hampshire law. There are LOTS of Massachusetts laws that I don't like, which is one of the many reasons I don't live there. How much money you spend here really is your choice. When you enter another...

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

That is the heart of the problem. The $1 surcharge on OHRV and boat registration was not enough money to cover SAR activities.

No, the law was posted earlier by sardog here: http://www.vftt.org/forums/showpost.php?p=285039&postcount=70 That page is a "reader friendly" version of the law that was placed on the hikesafe.com website.

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

Actually, I believe it sends this message, which New Hampshire has kindly put up on a website for everyone to read: http://www.hikesafe.com/index.php/rescue/anatomy_of_a_rescue/liability_statutes

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

It seems to me that a lot of non-New Hampshire residents are criticizing this action. For those of you who don't live here, you really don't have a horse in the race. This seems to be just another case of out-of-staters upset that New Hampshire doesn't provide the same services that their home...

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

I just sent an email supporting the State of New Hampshire. The law may not be perfect, but there needs to be a dis-incentive to call for help. 9-1-1 is not bailout plan. This kid is a minor, and his parents allowing him to go on a hike like this is terrible parenting. They are still legally...

Arcadia Cracks Down on Rock Thieves

If they are cool enough to steal, they are certainly cool enough to protect. I know its low-hanging fruit to make fun of someone trying save rocks, but this seems to be a somewhat serious issue. I'm sure it was considered a joke to take a piece of Plymouth Rock until 2/3rds of the thing disappeared.

Naw - your response was great! And FWIW, it came off as very well thought out and rational. I'm just a little more accustomed to dealing with the troll types from Whiteblaze.net. :) And I agree, if anything, there are more females out there than ever, in part of what you talked about. Keep up...

Mountain Lion in Pawtuckaway - Let the debate begin

The weight of the thing I saw is the biggest problem with it being a mountain lion from what I can tell. I was telling the story to my father this morning, and said that it was about the size if his dog. He responded "You saw a 60 lb cat?" So I guess the size/weight of the cat I saw is what I...

Mountain Lion in Pawtuckaway - Let the debate begin

OK, so I'm claiming that I just saw a mountain lion in Pawtuckaway SP. First, let me say that before tonight there was no way I thought they were this far south in NH. In fact, I'd say that if they were here, they would be up in Coos County, north of the Whites. Here is what I saw. Walking on...

    Squaw in place names

And if anyone cares about my opinion... this seems to be a case of keeping up with the Jones. As we have evolved as a society and decided not to accept truly offensive and hateful words being used an longer. Now I get the feeling that all sorts of people want to jump in on the action. Think...
