    Pisgah in jeopardy

As long as the land continues to be preserved, I think that is the important issue. Volunteers would certainly step in to maintain the trail systems, and for day use, facilities are mostly unnecessary. This might be a good thing for Pisgah, adding more to its wilderness feel. In fact, I'd be...

    Durango or Yosemite?

Durango - I was fairly unimpressed with Yosemite. The valley is a total nightmare, and until I got into the heart of the Clark Range, the views were good, but not great. Don't get me wrong, Half Dome is awesome, and El Cap is impressive, but that place is a total zoo. Note: I did not go to...

    The Traveler Loop - BSP - 6/14/09

Grace and I headed up to Baxter State Park on a rainy Friday and check into our lean-to on South Branch Pond. Fortunately, the clouds parted and the sun came out as we were cooking dinner. While there was no rain on Saturday, things were not quite as nice as I had hoped. Still, we had very good...

    Evans Notch to Route 2 Backpack: 6/5 - 6/7

Thanks everyone for the great comments! I have nothing else to add, but I'm going to try to beat the VFTT record for replying to a thread that I started.

    Evans Notch to Route 2 Backpack: 6/5 - 6/7

Evans Notch to Route 2 Backpack. The Hikers: Giggy, Darlene, Mookie and myself. The Idea: Looking for something a little different and off the beaten path, yet with plenty of views since the weekend weather was looking pretty good. The Hike: Approximately 30 miles starting from the Baldface...

The TB map, with the now-closed Larcom Trail still displayed, is still being hosted here: http://www.franklinsites.com/hikephotos/files/nhtrailbanditossipees.php Rocket - when do you think you will have time to remove these maps from your site? Do you have any intentions of removing this map...

A good first step might be removing the map from any host sites until it is changed. Currently several versions of the map are still available here: http://www.franklinsites.com/hikephotos/files/nhtrailbanditossipees.php This map directly lead to the closure of 1000 acres and the map has not...

I'll end my discussion as well. I didn't claim you said that either. What I did say is that there are logging roads on the TB map that I cannot find anywhere else. Its obviously not possible to go back in time and change things. Nor can you t take back a map that's been given or downloaded. But...

Its not your decision and its not your map, but you have been aggressively defending their inclusion for several posts. I'm stating they should be removed as a show of good faith to the landowners. You have been stating they should be included on the map because they are included on other maps...

No there isn't. But as the AMC closed access to the Mt Cabot Trail to maintain good relations with ALL private landowners, perhaps the USGS removed the logging roads to do the same. If a landowner is not happy with features that are on a publicity available map, IMO, these features should be...

And why do you think that these logging roads were removed from more recent maps? Perhaps because the landowners requested they be removed?

Where is this illegal clearing thing coming from? I'll repeat myself again - my issue is with defending this map. Let me quote myself again, from my very first post in this thread: As for your assumptions, the only thing I'll say about that is that there is a very big difference between...

There are miles of logging roads that are shown in the northern part of the map (your unshaded portion), and not just in the area of Larcom Mtn. Virtually none of these logging roads appear in the the USGS topo maps of the area.

Since I'm a narcissist, I'm going to quote myself: Maybe nobody had a problem with the map when it came out. But they do have a problem with it now. Let me ask again - what is going to be accomplished by defending this map? What do you hope to accomplish by fighting for the right to keep...

Great post. Doing anything that makes landowners uneasy can cause problems, even if its "ok" to do. And the AMC agrees with this logic. They officially closed the Mt Cabot Trail because of a landowner dispute. Even though the landowner at the end of the road is cool with the trail, and even...

I really didn't want to spend this much time on this whole issue, but that statement is incorrect. Included below are two images, one from the USGS Topo and one from the TB Map. As you can see, the TB map depicts logging roads that are NOT on the USGS Topo. I can't speak to the other sources...
