Losing Weight and Getting into Shape

I have a college calculus book that had one of my favorite quotes in it. The author was going through a complex problem solving exercise when in the middle of it he said, “The rest is intuitively obvious even to the most casual observer.” Are ya kiddin’ me? It took another page of iterations...

I echo the kudos for your image, Blaze. Very nice composition and mood. Cropping is a little tight but still very pleasing. Nice job! JohnL

    Las Vegas in Mid-April?

I've been to Red Rocks a couple times and also hiked up Turtlehead Peak once. While nice, it is nothing compared to Zion. I'd figure at least 3 hours to drive from Vegas to Zion. There was a lot of Interstate construction on the outskirts of Vegas when I was there in October that slowed me...

Fitness for Training Old Farts 55+

I’m 59 and I’ve been working out in a gym 4-5x/wk for about 22 years now since I stopped playing competitive sports. My current workout consists of 15 mins of cardio warm-up, 35 mins of weights (daily alternating chest, back & shoulders and doing legs nearly every day) and core exercises, 35...

    Kinsmans

Last Friday we went up Fishin' Jimmy so I know that is broken out. North Kinsman Tr was not recently traveled but when I walked about 20 yards down the trail, the snow was consolidated beneath about three inches of fresh powder. Easier? North Kinsman Tr. JohnL

    Trailhead for N. Kinsman

Four of us went up Fishin' Jimmy on Friday and it was beautiful. The steeper sections provide a nice aerobic challenge on the way up and an increased excitement factor on the way down. PUDs at the end of the day are frustrating but not miserable. Snowshoes were the order of the day. JohnL

    N&S Kinsman via L Lake & Fishin' Jimmy Tr's, Jan 8

Trail Conditions: L Lake packed out nicely, Fishin' Jimmy less so and between the peaks not at all. Special Equipment Required: MicroSpike STs to the Lake, snowshoes to the peaks and back with bare boots from the Hut to the lot. Comments: Though four of us packed out the trails, they are by...

Keeping snacks & gadgets handy & warm on winter hikes.

My camera is also kept in a small fanny pack turned to the front. If it is really cold, the battery goes into my mitts. I usually wear thin liners so this keeps the hand sweat from making direct contact with the battery. Gadgets (compass, Kestral (wind, temp), chap stick, pills) are kept in a...

Books by women or about women

Another vote for Beryl Markham's "West With the Night". A book that makes you sad that there are not more pages to read. The Lost Men: The Harrowing Saga of Shackleton's Ross Sea Party by Kelly Tyler-Lewis is a gripping story of Shackleton's other crew, the men who laid the line of supply...

    Chocorua, Bluejeans, and sneakers

I’m surprised that some of you could even see the blue jeans and sneakers with your noses so high in the air. There’s only one reason to scoff at what others are wearing: to create a faux feeling of superiority. Gimme a break! What a bunch of gear snobs! If cotton kills, I would have been...

    Steve House: Beyond the Mountain

Nice to hear a couple of endorsements for the book. I bought a signed copy when it first came out but newer books keep piling up on top of it on the shelf. I'll have to re-prioritize the pile now. I had read House's article in Alpinist Mag. Amazing stuff. Some great photos in the book as...
