    ADK 3-day Shoe-&-Ski Haul

Lake Newcomb One suggestion would be to ski into the Great Camp Santanoni via the tote road, and then over to some of the Lentos around the lake provided the lake is frozen. Plenty of places to explore back there. Even some slide skiing, or ice fishing if your so inclined! One nice...

Where is the trail head to hike Dix-Hough-Carson-Macomb-Grace?

For the mortals The 2 times I've successfully completed the Dix loop in winter, we climbed Macomb via the slide, dropped packs and gear at the col between Carson and Hough, continued on to Grace and returned to the col to spend the night. On the way out the following day, we did Hough and Dix...

    Kilburn Slide

Thanks Thanks for the beta Neil. Looks like it would require a large dumping of snow for the entire slide to be skiable. It looks like a great winter climb/ski! :D

    Kilburn Slide

I'm hoping to get out and do a bit more backcountry skiing this winter. I'm very interested in the Kilburn Slide in the Adirondacks. It sounds like a "gem" in all the descriptions I’ve read. Do people ski the entire slide from the top. Is the slide steep enough to carve turns the length of it...

    ADK High Peaks Traverse

Objectives? John, It might help to list some of the peaks you would like to attempt. There are plenty of good-hearted folks here who would love discuss and or suggest possible routes. What are your objectives and how much experience do you have in the high peaks in winter? Are you going to...

    The Spider

For those that are looking for yet another option. These look pretty cool. I believe they are brand new and have no idea of the durability. I know Grivel is a good company though At the price it might be worth a look. http://www.grivelnorthamerica.com/p...php?gid=5&id=40 Some more pictures...

    Another Winter Boot question

http://www.neice.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=MTR&Product_Code=SnowbowW&Category_Code=53 My wife has used these for 2 seasons now and loves them. She generally sticks to the trails with some occasional off trail slide type stuff. She uses grivel G12 Classic crampons and they...

Ice axe route in the NE

What does a leash have to do with self-arresting? I strongly suggest that anyone using a leash on steep routes where a long slide is a potential, knows how to use it properly in all types of falls.

    Western Mountaineering Puma -15

I wouldn't worry about testing the Puma too much. The best climbers in the world have tested it for years. Many climbers have even used it on Denali. I realize people have different tolerances to cold, but believe me, it a very warm bag. With good insulation underneath, it's easily good to...

    Nalgene question

You guy's wash your Nalgene's???????????/ :D I always treated them like I treat my crampons or ski edges when they get rusty. I JUST USE THEM and hope for the best! :p

Fuel consumption for a new stove setup

Estimating Fuel Consumption Canister: Difficult — you need to weigh canisters to determine how much remains. White Gas: Easy — simply turn off the stove and look in the tank to see how much remains. As you ascend in elevation, atmospheric pressure decreases and water boils at a lower...

    JBL Trip: 3/19/6 - 3/21/6

Sounds like a great trip, wish I could attend. Unfortunately, I will also be in Lake Placid for the MOE show. My wife and I will most likely do some hiking, and maybe we can meet up on the trails. Chickencoop Brook is always good this time of year! This was a great Idea Tom, us VFTT'ers...

    Humor me.

This is why I enjoy bushwhacking and slide climbing so much. When you stay off the main trails, the only person to scrutinize is yourself. ;)

    WNY Beer Gathering: 11-07

Had a great time as always! Nice to see the gang again. I forgot who I was talking to about the route "Bloody Mary", but it's up in Poko and was first climbed by John Turner, Dick Strachan and Dick Wilmott in 1959. For more than 15 years it stood as the toughest route in the Dacks. :D

    MSR's new Lightning Ascents

Thanks for the feedback I have used the Denali's and although they had good traction I didn't like the stride of them. Felt like my feet were too far apart. I've tried Crescent Moon Gold series and thought the binding was the best out of all the shoes but not enough traction for steep icy...

    MSR's new Lightning Ascents

After years of using my trusty Sherpa's, I'm considering getting a new pair of shoes. :( I really like these, but I'm wondering about the durability of them. http://www.snowshoecenter.com/shop/product.cfm?p=804 Has anyone put them to the test yet? I don't mean on the trails, but in the thick...
