Great news for hikers - Land Purchase

I read in Adirondack Fire Towers that FP owned Boreas Mountain and that the trail to the tower crossed Elk Lake Lodge property.

Great news for hikers - Land Purchase

Lots of great stuff: Boreas Mountain (#65 in height), Boreas Ponds, Blue Ledges in Hudson Gorge, OK Slip Falls (highest falls in Park, I believe), part of Blue Mountain, miscellaneous lakes and peaks (most near the High Peaks region). TNC intends to renew leases with sportsmen. It may be 18...

Great news for hikers - Land Purchase

The Adirondack Nature Conservancy announced today that it has purchased all 161,000 acres formerly owned by Finch, Pruyn. The public will not have access to the lands immediately, but down the road, we no doubt will be able to use at least some of the lands. The property includes such gems as...

    Loon Lake Mt. fire tower

Is anybody interested in attending a meeting, probably in Saranac Lake, on the Loon Lake Mt. fire tower? A committee is needed to oversee the rehab of the tower and its continued maintenance. With easement deals in the works, a trail across timberlands to the summit is a real possibility.

    Snow conditions

Thinking of doing some XC skiing this weekend. Probably the best conditions are in the Tug Hill region. Can anybody provide info on conditions there? Are there other places with enough to ski?

    Approach shoes

I recently saw an article in the NY Times on approach shoes. They gave one-paragraph "reviews" of five makes. They're pretty pricey, $75 to $100. But they sound like they'd be ideal for slides. Has anyone tried them on the steeper slides, such as Eagle? How do they compare with rock shoes? With...

    Dog on Placid Slide?

Thinking about taking a friend and his dog (and son) up the Placid Slide on Whiteface. I remember there is a steep scramble at the end. Do you think a dog could find its way to the top?

    Rescue policy in Whites

Who determines what is "reckless"? And what are the criteria?

    Rescue policy in Whites

Can someone tell me who pays for rescues in the White Mountains (and in Vermont and Maine, for that matter)? Is the rescuee ever forced to pay? If so, under what circumstances? Thanks.

Yes, the Explorer is a nonprofit publication. We focus on environmental issues, outdoor recreation, wildlife and people in the Park. Unplanned bivy

I am working on a story for the Adirondack Explorer about people who have had to spend an unplanned night out in the woods in the Adirondacks during cold weather. I'm interested in knowing what happened, what gear you had, what gear you wished you had, what gear proved most useful. If you're...

    Whites guidebook

Thanks for all the feedback. Very helpful. I wouldn't mind seeing a little more discussion on the maps. I take it those that come with the books are less than ideal.

    Whites guidebook

What's the best guidebook for someone who wants to start hiking in NH? I'll probably stick largely to the 4,000-footers.

    Hydration pack in winter

Blowing back into the bladder works only if you remember to do it often--perhaps every fifteen minutes if it's cold. I usually forget and end up biting and twisting the hose near the mouthpiece to break the ice jam. Has anybody tried the newer bladder packs with the hose running inside the...
