    AMC Maine Mountain Guide

Ah, that's pretty smart. I was fixed on getting the MMG hoping it covers the AT well enough. Instead I could get the MATC and make do with that for the 4000ers. But doesn't the AT go over both Saddlebacks? (And Saddleback Junior too!) I wouldn't need a ski area approach then.

    AMC Maine Mountain Guide

Thanks! I think I'll just get all three: AMC Maine Mt Guide, ATC Maine AT Guide, and the Delorme Atlas and Gazetteer. All three cost about $70 and I'm certainly willing to pay that for the comfort of knowing where I'm going. The AMC White Mountain Guide, 28th edition, does have a description...

    AMC Maine Mountain Guide

The AMC Maine Mountain Guide is now in the 9th edition from 2005. Does anybody know when a new edition might be coming out? Also does it have trail descriptions and maps for the 13 eastern Maine 4000-footers? (Old Speck is covered in the AMC White Mountain Guide.) And is the whole Maine AT...

    Long Trail Shuttle?

I'm considering walking part of the Long Trail, maybe Lincoln Gap to Smuggler's Notch. I would like to start Thursday or Friday morning, or possibly a day earlier or later. Is there any taxi service, hiker shuttle, or any here on VFTT who can give me and a friend a ride from my car to the...

    Nutrition question for long day-hike.

If you plug in 0 miles, then it comes up with 0 calories. So it's definitely not accurate. Must be ignoring basal metabolic rate. 10,000 calories sounds like an overestimation to me, unless you're carrying a heavy pack, running nonstop, or weigh a lot. My last walk was 42 miles, 4200 feet...

    sandwich notch road

Yep, Bear Notch Road connecting the Kanc to US-302 in Bartlett. I had been avoiding "notch roads" after my Sandwich experience, but will give Bear and Jefferson a try this summer. Will come in handy if US-3 gets washed out again this year. On the satellite images on google maps, Sandwich...

    sandwich notch road

Lucky you. I was scathed. Needed a new muffler for my Nissan Maxima. If I lived near Tecumseh and were driving to Whiteface/Passaconaway, I'd take I-93. Does anyone know how Sandwich Notch Road compares to Jefferson Notch Road and Bear Notch Road? Are any of them reasonable alternatives to...

Dry River Trail (US-302 to Lakes of the Clouds)

Dates of Hike: August 18 - 21 Trail Conditions: The 1.7 miles south of the suspension bridge were dry, flat, and easy. The first crossing of the Dry River, in thigh-deep water, was treacherous, potentially fatal, exciting, and manageable after spending 10 minutes to scout out a spot to cross...

Pete Fish joins the "700 Club"

On Thursday I climbed Marcy for the first time. There was a nice festive atmosphere up there with Peter Fish celebrating his 700th walk up there. Luckily, the wind was 0-5 mph, so I didn't need to wonder if men in kilts should stay below treeline.

    Rattlers in W.Mass now??

It's not quite New England, but on Saturday 8/9/08, along the AT in New Jersey between Sunfish Pond and Camp Mohican (about 7 miles north of the PA/NJ crossing), I saw two copperheads and one timber rattlesnake. The copperheads were just curled up in the rocks. But the rattlesnake was in the...

Cabot via York Pond/Bunnell Notch/Kilkenny Ridge

Nice report. Being flexible with your plans helps a lot. And those north country peaks seem to get less precipitation than the bigger peaks a little further south. I know there was much less snow on top of Cabot back on May 16th compared to the other high peaks. Is that true? Does anyone...

    6. Bank machines. My ATM card worked in most machines. Be sure to check the back of your card for symbols (mine has NYCE, Cirrus, and STAR), then check the machine for the same symbols. If any match, it should work. If your card doesn't work the first time, don't try a second time! Switch...

    Annapurna Trek

I walked through Nepal in November/December 2006. You definitely need passport photos for the visa at Tribhuvan Airport. I wished I had Diamox (acetazolamide), but I didn't bring it along because I thought it a crutch. You can buy it cheap and without a prescription in Kathmandu. Try...

Unprepared Hikers On Washington-Union Leader Article

Before I ever stepped foot in New Hampshire, I had heard plenty about the dangers of Mt Washington. A report on NPR, Bill Bryson's Walk in the Woods, and almost any web page turned up by googling "hike mount washington" carried clear warnings. So even after moving here, I didn't attempt...

Woman's Car Broken Into While Hiking

The article didn't say exactly where this break-in occurred. The by-line said Gilford. I wonder if it was Mt. Major in Alton. In mid-spring, I pulled into the parking lot there. An out-of-shape man was already there, seemingly getting ready to walk. I started up the trail, then stopped once...
