Alternative to Havasu Falls in June

The only thing I can suggest is to keep calling, and hoping for a possible cancellation. It's the same way as far as trying to obtain a Grand Canyon overnight permit from the back country office, or trying to secure an overnight reservation at Phantom Ranch. Instead of using a waiting list...

    End of an Era

Before I retired and moved out here to Arizona, I worked for a steel fabrication shop. I had purchased my crampons in 1975 at EMS in Boston and they survived for nearly 30 years with some judicious weld repairs in a couple of spots. Now I can get by with Yak Trax for the odd icy section of...

    Canister stoves on airplanes

John, any other details you might need help with, just give a yell. Not sure what your travel situation is between trailheads. Grandview is about 10 miles or so east of the main entrance road and there is no shuttle service between the main park and Grandview point. There is taxi service...

    Canister stoves on airplanes

FWIW, if you're heading here to Grand Canyon and you're hesitant about whether to take the stove/fuel or not, both the stoves and fuel are available at the backpacking supplies and general store at the Grand Canyon village in Market Plaza. If you're planning on an early start to the hike...

Anyone doing the Mt Washington Road Race 2013?

Two time back of the packer, did more power walking than running. First time was in 1986 at the age of 37. I had a goal of finishing in under 2 hours and from the halfway point onwards, I kept an eye on my watch, trying to constantly calculate if I would make it or not. Things got a little...

Other National Parks affected by government cutbacks

I have not heard anything on the local news regarding the length of time to make the necessary road repairs. There was significant land displacement and shifting, and I imagine it will be well into the fall at the very minimum...but that is just a wild guess on my part. The damage was just a...

Other National Parks affected by government cutbacks

I'm re-posting this here after deleting it from the New England sub-forum. The news that came down from Grand Canyon NP in a bulletin I received a few days ago was that they expected ranger services to be curtailed somewhat. This would mostly affect the staffing of the multi-entrance booth...

Which direction for a Pemi Loop....

I will vote for clockwise, as that's the way I did it a number of years ago. Without doing any running, I started at 6 AM and finished a bit before 9 PM. The most drudgery was the climb up Garfield from Lafayette, with a 2nd place awarded to the flat trek out from Bondcliff Trail back to the...

Grand Canyon trip - looking for advice

Sorry for jumping in a bit late, I haven't checked in here in months. There is a shuttle service that runs between the south rim and north rim, daily. The road mile distance between the two is around 250 miles. Here is a link below to the shuttle service. The negative side of the shuttle is...

    Grand Canyon backpack, 10/8-10/14

The Hermit trail is not as difficult as some of the trail descriptions would lead you to believe. The corkscrew section through the redwall down to the Tonto Platform is switchbacks and there is no exposure. There are a couple of sections of trail where rockslides have obliterated the footpath...

Highpoint: Arizona. Humphreys Peak (12,637 ft). September 18, 2011

We moved to Prescott in June 2010 after I retired, so now I spend way too much time at Grand Canyon. I have not tried that pizza place in Flagstaff, but I do know that Prescott has not found the secret to making a good pizza. Then again, the search continues! :D

Highpoint: Arizona. Humphreys Peak (12,637 ft). September 18, 2011

Congrats on the successful trip up Humphreys! I know how you guys felt, it took a good 3 weeks after moving out here to feel totally comfortable with the altitude. And then climbing Humphreys was the equivalent of doing Washington in terms of effort.

    Garmin GPS watch review

Do you have anything to back up either of these statements? Personally, I think they both are a bit far-fetched. This guy did a battery of tests on wrist gps accuracy, and his 98.9% rate while running is pretty good...

Managing a Garmin Nuvi GPS with MapSource

Kevin, this is a shot in the dark, but you might try opening a user account at http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/ and ask in the forum there. They might be able to give you a more definitive answer on the file structure of the GPS. One of the frequent users there, Boyd, is pretty savvy regarding...

Listen to your heart...and be well

Add me to the list of those who are glad you're feeling better! I suppose you could blame it on the Arizona water? :o Thanks for the tip about monitoring things as we get older...I figure I have about 20 more years and then I'll have to start worrying about that. :D
