    Waterproof Socks ?

I have worn VBL socks...Glad Freezer Bags...for a winter day hike, and, somehow, I did not get trench foot.

    Looks like Winter out there.

One of my friends was at Loon. There was some guy in the lift line who was not wearing a mask for one reason or another. A heated discussion between everyone else on the lift line and this guy occurred. The attendant made the guy leave the line and told him he would lose his pass if he came back...

Movers (Saran) Wrap For field repairs like duct tape?

I unpacked my snowshoes from a recent move. The snowshoes were bound together by many layers movers wrap--enough to keep the sharp cleats from gauging anything. This movers wrap is just a 5-inch section of Saran Wrap on a roll. I didn't take the Saran Wrap off until I was well up on the...

    Looks like Winter out there.

2 inches at the entrance to Lincoln Woods getting up to 4-5 inches at Franconia Falls. I'm sure the higher elevations got more. On the plus side it was dead empty with barely 1 row of cars in the lot..about 2x Mass plates to NH plates.

    Take Me To GPS School

Here are a couple ways I have used my GPS. To verify my conclusions from map and compass work. To determine the identity of peaks way off on the horizon. To mark waypoints on my hikes when I see something useful...a source of water..water that has beaver activity....a good place for a tent...

    Rain Gloves

Paddlers use gloves that have a rubber gasket which touches the rubber gasket of a dry or semi-dry suit. Latex needs to touch latex to seal water out....latex on skin will leak and the only way to get good results is to use alot of it or make as tight as possible---like a neck gasket I use...

    Rescue and fatality 9/13/20

Ok, drifting off the thread more... The historical section of that site has been shut down so I can't check. In any event the app was showing an MH60 doing some racetrack patterns in Cape Cod Bay last night. Don't they have to keep it on (when not on a mission) for traffic avoidance and...

    Rescue and fatality 9/13/20

Looked like a black hawk came in and landed at Concord later that day in the sunset. I took out the Fight Radar App to see where it had been, but unlike some other military flights, there was no civil aviation transponder track. As aside, the state police, Civil Air Patrol, and the air ambulance...

    New EMS Order Policy

EMS is no longer being accomodating as they used to be. I ordered a Thule adaptor on 8/8...the web site said it was not available locally. Later that day, I was in the in the store browsing and found 2 of these adaptors. I bought one and sent an email request that evening to customer service...

Upticks in Infections in Mass and RI

Finishing up a kayak trip on the west side of Mount Desert Island..... ..After 4 days , I only saw 10-12 cars from Maine's hot states...two of those were senior citizens driving Florida cars. The rest were Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and District of Columbia...traffic is the usual crazy but...

Upticks in Infections in Mass and RI

It's hard for me to believe that Connecticut will go red if there is one covid death. AFAIK, the decisions are based on infection rate (or change in percentage)...because death is a lagging indicator and the infection is already in the statistics. I am morbidly curious about infection rate in...

Valley Sees Record Crowds - and Problems

I drove up to Lincoln from the Pembroke area and back tonight. At 900PM on this Thursday night, the lot was 60-70 percent full. There were cars parked sporadically on west bound side up to the sign for Hancock. They are collecting fees. Plenty of steady traffic in town..

    Gale River Road Campsite Vandalized

Long ago, when I first started to come up here, I was told by AMC that trailhead break-ins are most common in the shoulder seasons when seasonal unemployment is high.

Surfing Rash Guard As A Layer

They are useful for kayaking to prevent chafing against the more rigid ("ballistic") fabrics of dry/semi-dry suits or a bare PFD. They are useful for SCUBA because they make it easier to get in and out of non-premium wetsuits. But I cant think of an equivalent use while hiking other than what a...

    More trail closings?

Other social media has given Southern New Hampshire residents the same advice. Concord, Manchester, Bedford and anywhere south and east are technically hot spots--the orange and red on the maps follows population density pretty well. To be honest, I feel more comfortable shopping at the...
