    Spider Camp Wild River Wilderness

I met a guy at Spruce Peak Shelter on the LT about a dozen years ago who told me about it. The details are hazy but if I remember them correctly it had been a cook shack for the logging company and had been hauled in on skids over the snow. After logging operations ceased it was left behind. It...

Anyone have any recollection of a cabin in the W.R.W. in the vicinity of the eponymous Spider Bridge?

    Camera/Storage Case For Backpack Straps

Here's what I've been using for quite a few years: Eagle Creek Camera Case. It also uses velcro straps to secure it to the pack strap but much like iAmKrys, I've never really had any problems with it staying put. In situations like bushwacking where I might be more nervous about it, I can take...

Are you certain he wasn't just using that as an excuse to take trips to Buenos Aires to spend time with his mistress?

Apropos of the NELSAP reference by jneihof, is there a database for lost nordic ski areas that exists anywhere?

    Mt. Cube Ski Touring Center

I did come across this from a Feb. 2000 Chicago Tribune reference (http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2000-02-20/travel/0002200078_1_maple-syrup-sugar-shacks-maple-sugar/3) "Finally, former New Hamsphire Gov. Meldrim Thompson himself boils and barrels maple syrup for visitors to his Mt. Cube...

    Mt. Cube Ski Touring Center

I'm curious what the history is of this location that popped up using Garmin's MapSource software. I assume it has some basis in reality but is no longer in existence just like the location of the "DOC Camp" near the Baker Rd. Cross Rivendell trailhead that also shows up using the same software.

    Wind turbines in GMNF

The appeals process must have run its course. Construction seems to be underway. I was up there yesterday and the corridor for the overhead transmission line has now been cut. There are equipment and materials in a staging area in the GMP enclosure at the bottom of the current turbine access road.

    Butt sledding haters?

Out of curiosity, does anyone know of even a single accident involving a sled? (barring the usual spring hijinks in the Tuckerman bowl) Sitting glissades, especially with crampons, have led to some serious injuries.

    Butt sledding haters?

It's a non-issue until it makes the Accidents notes in Appalachia. Then it might become something to regulate. Are you talking "sitting glissade" or actual plastic sled sliding on trails? I think the former is part of hiking. The latter can be more problematic. On trails like Tuckerman Ravine...

    Ski Trail On Mt Washington?

I think you can assume that any line above treeline that leads in the direction of a skier's destination is a "ski route." There is no incentive to stay on a summer route, i.e. following the cairns, if the visibility is good and the snow cover is adequate to float you over most of the terrain...

    Ski resort parking areas

I thought it was here, but regardless there was some b*tch'n that skiers were being lured off the summit away from the trails by hikers that had made tracks to the AT and the solution to the problem was to keep all traffic going only in the correct direction.

    Ski resort parking areas

I think I now remember what it was that would get you in trouble at Sugarloaf in the winter. I believe it is accessing the AT to connect up with Spaulding and Abraham. That is now verboten if I'm correct.

    Ski resort parking areas

Haven't done it in a while but when I did the same thing, the ski area parking lot was not closed to hikers cars and in fact there were signs indicating the best route for hikers to take to the summit. I doubt things have changed much even with the ownership up in the air. But perhaps someone...
