    How to handle snorting deer?

I have never had a problem with deer. They do snort at me in the rut and when the mothers are with fawns but they are not aggressive enough to attack. It can be scary but you will be fine.

    Kaaterskill HP Best Route

Thanks for all the great advice. I will make a point to head to Hurricane Ledge, and also the fort and plane wrecks. I will leave trail conditions, and post some pictures from this trip and trips from the winter in the Trip Reports section of the forum.

    Kaaterskill HP Best Route

Next weekend I am going to bushwack up KHP. I was wondering what the best route up is. I am thinking of parking on Platte Clove Mtn Road and heading up to Round Top then KHP. I was wondering what the best route is, preferably the best views, and least thick spruce. I would also like to see the...

    How Are The Black Flies

Today I was in the northern Catskills stream fishing. I didnt see many black flies, but I did see lots of mayflies and gnats, but the black flies and mosquitos arent bad yet, but next weekend I think they will be out in full force.

Whats the latest you've ever seen snow in the Catskills?

What is the latest you have ever seen snow on the ground left over from winter, in the Catskills? The latest I have ever seen snow left over from winter was Memorial Day weekend up on Indian Head Mtn in a very shady ravine near Jimmy Dolan Notch. From what I have seen the snow usually last...

Anyone know any "psycho in the woods" type stories?

I heard a story from my neighbor who has lived in Putnam County his whole life, in the same house. He told me that in the 50's when the carnival was in town some guy who worked there went crazy and killed some people and ran off into the woods behind my house. A few days later a local boy saw...

    Questions about Indian Head Mt.

From the Rip Van Winkle Bridge is where Indian Head Mtn looks like a head. Almost anywhere in Columbia County has that view of Indian Head.[

    Notches or Gaps without highways?

I forgot about Mink Hollow and "The Other Mink Hollow" near Hunter Mtn. Both are spectacular and have no roads going though them.

    Favorite New York Mountain

Blackdome in the Catskills. There are great views, lots of wildlife, great fishing in the stream going up the south slope, and good hunting too. I guess it could just be that I have been hiking on that mountain for most of my life, and it brings back lots of memories. I also have a friend who...

    Notches or Gaps without highways?

In the Catskills there is Diamond Notch, Pecoy Notch, Jimmy Dolan Notch, and Dutcher Notch are all without roads. There are a few smaller ones without roads as well. Stoney Clove Notch has a road through it, yet its still spectacular.

Devil's Path; Platte Clove to Mink Hollow 4/3-6.

Hey Tom, it sounds like you had quite an adventure back in those mountains. Even though it was challenging I bet it was still fun. Atleast everybody is ok, and nobody got hurt or hypothermia. The Catskills may not have the reputation that the Whites have, but they can be just as challenging...

    Black Fly Update

Snowshoe, this wasnt in the Catskills. This was in Putnam County. There arent that many black flies here, but they still can be annoying sometimes.

    Black Fly Update

Today down here in southeastern NY the black flies came out. While taking a short hike near my house, I noticed them. They are never really that bad here, but they are still annoying. Its just part of spring, yet it reminded me that up north they will be coming out in a few weeks, and there they...

    Mt Lion in Jersey

That cougar could have been released, escaped from his owner, or just came in from somewhere else. Well since many of the farms in the northeast are growing back into woods things such as wolves, moose, and cougars are working their way into northern New England, and the ADK's and Catskills. I...

    Devil's Pulpit (Catskills)

Stony Clove is one of my favorite areas of the Catskills. Its the dividing line of the Devils Path, and has a desolate and rugged feel to it. I have not been to the Devils Pulpit, but even if its not that spectacular I will check it out. The whole Devils Path is full of surprises, which is why...

    Confirmed Gray Wolf in Adirondacks

Its about time the DEC finally admitted that there are wolves in New York state. Next they just have to admit that there are cougars. Wolves probably worked their way in from Algonquin Provincial Park in Canada into the ADK's, and from there made it to the Catskills and Vermont. Its possible...

    Catskills in spring

Mid May is my favorite time of year in the Catskills. There is nothing nicer than starting the hike with leaves out down low then heading up high where there are no leaves, then finding snow in the spruce-fir forest above 3500'. In mid May I always like a nice long bushwack where I follow a...

    Strange Creatures Invade North Country

Based on the reports I saw Greene County got anywhere from 7" to 10", Ulster got only 5" to 8", yet Schoharie, Western Albany, Otsego, and Delaware got 10" to 12". Sullivan only got about 5" to 7". The links below have snowfall information reported by observers around the area...
