    Kaaterskill High Peak

Thanks for all the great info Mark. I remember when I was looking across at KHP I saw lots of ravines, waterfalls, ledges, and slides. Freddy, that area is great and full of nice things, and this spring I will definitely do some exploring down in the cloves and maybe some fishing too.

    Kaaterskill High Peak

A few weeks back when I was hiking near Sunset Rock I was amazed by the view of KHP. Since then I really want to climb KHP via bushwack from the very bottom of Route 23C aka "The Rip Van Winkle Trail". It would be an ascent of about 3000', and round trip of about 7 or 8 miles. Every year in the...

Today's NY Times Adirondack Cougar Article

As Mark and Freddy said there are really no reports of wolverines attacking humans. Since wolverines have been killed and trapped so much they now only live in places in the far north where there are virtually no people. I think if someone was to let some go in the northeast there would be problems.

Today's NY Times Adirondack Cougar Article

Wolverines are natural to northern Michingan and Minnesota, and much of the northeast such as the Catskills, Adirondacks, western Massachusets, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Northern Maine. They are even more vicious than cougars so that is animal that I dont think I want back here. Since they...

    Mt. Biking

Old logging Roads I find the best places to mountain bike are old logging roads. They are not that steep, wide, yet still nice and rugged. I love mountain biking, and even just plain old biking, but I hike and fish a lot more.

    Grafton SP (Taconics of NY)

I was wondering if anyone had been to Grafton SP in Rensselaer County. I have been to Cherry Plain SP and Cherry Plain WMA which is a little to the south of Grafton, and it was great for Mtn Biking, XC Skiing, hiking, hunting, and wildlife viewing. I always like going to unheard of places that...

Today's NY Times Adirondack Cougar Article

They are there I definitely think that there are cougars in the Catskills and the Adirondacks. Maybe even Lynx. Even though there are few if any sightings by officials, the locals are the ones who know the mountains the best and know what is there. In the general backcountry section of this...

Slide Mnt. via the slide (Catskills)

Platte Clove Try goin to Platte Clove Mtn Road, but not this time of the year. Its a very nice road with many great views and gets almost no traffic. Its unplowed so its a great place to snowshoe, but I wouldnt ski down it because there are no guard rails, and if you fell it would be a long...

Value of a Beard on the Trail

Some people tell me that they grow a beard in winter to keep their face warm. I dont know how good this works, but in real cold weather a beard often gets rimed with ice. That cant be good. I dont think I would grow a beard just to keep warm. If its real cold I just wear a wool mask. So what do...

    Keeping the toes warm?

In the cold weather I find nothing better on my feet then a few pairs of wool socks, and my Kamik boots that are rated to -40F. I have never had a problem with that setup. Once again, it may be my extreme tolerance for the cold, but I think it could keep anyone warm. I wore them in -28F a few...

    Keeping fingers warm?

Two weeks ago in -24F I wore wool undermitts with water resistant overmitts. Once I was moving around my hands were warm. After a few hours they started to sweat. Either those gloves are great, or my extreme tolerance for the cold was working. They are only $10 so check them out in the link...

Slide Mnt. via the slide (Catskills)

Bob, are you sure that slide near Twilight Park is not visible from the Rip Van Winkle Trail, and not 23C? I think I noticed last time I went up that way. Thanks anyway for the reminder. I think there is a slide up near Huntersfield Mtn. I remember that its up pretty high and has a series of...

    Recent Mountain Lion Sightings

mavs00, I definitely agree with you that the Rochester story is hard to believe because of the large city, and the abundant farms. I dont think western NY could have Cougars, but if one ever strayed that way it would probably go the wetlands near the Finger Lakes, not the vicinity of Rochester...

Slide Mnt. via the slide (Catskills)

I would have to agree with Mark that its the Shawagunks. The white cliffs are something common in the Shawagunks, white the cliffs in the Catskills are a more grey color. Many people often lump togethor the Catskills and Shawagunks, which is a big mistake. They are very different.
