    San Diego trail ideas

Second the Cowles Mountain and Mission Trails suggestions, and boy are they crowded (but beautiful anyway)... have to differ just a little on the Julian pie... it was OK but not spectacular, but I think I am a New England pie snob. Then again any pie after a hike is good.:D

    San Diego trail ideas

I really liked Cuyamaca Rancho SP when I was in the area a few years back for a meeting. If you have a car it is not far at all. I know they have had some fires there relatively recently though, so check before you go. Great views to the west from the peak in there, which is a short enough hike...

Crews search for missing 82-year-old hiker in NH - found safe

That is indeed a tough situation for many who keep hiking actively to and beyond that age... you run out of age-appropriate playmates. :) My Dad and I finished our NH4K (for me my NE67) last year together shortly before I moved, and I would venture to say he has another round in him yet at age...

    Brutus – In Memoriam, 2000-2011

Kevin, so, so sorry. May you have many opportunities to make more memories in the future while enjoying these.

    Winter is coming *tonight*!!

Enjoy, you've earned it! Here, we have real winter... but not in the mountains, only on the plains! Need to do a snow dance for the visitors who expect to ski on more than a half dozen trails over holiday break. Good xc skiing the past few days down here on the flats. Most ponds and...

    If I'd Only Known

Alpine start? Heck, why not an alpine finish? :D I REALLY want to climb a class 1 or 2 14er by moonlight sometime.

    Reno, NV and hiking.

It's been a few years since I've been there but at the time you only needed one for camping. That would be a fantastic test! "But sir, I'm really afraid of slipping and falling and these are my everyday footwear. And the cleats are already dull because I wear them on mixed terrain." Clomp...

    Reno, NV and hiking.

If you're willing to drive around to the southwest side of the lake, the Desolation Wilderness is one of my favorite hiking areas... but it may be too snowy for you. Perhaps the Tahoe Rim Trail would be better. On second thought, you may need snowshoes anywhere. Here's a paragraph from the NWS...

Think of me Saturday Oct. 1st

Best of luck!!! We stayed in St George twice this summer on our tour de Southwest and it's a nice little town- very nice people, cheap and good food and lodging. Just beware- Fall hasn't really come yet and it's good and hot- and dry!! - in this neck of the woods. Hydrate!!

    Colorado 14er Fini

Congrats! Now that I moved here for work, I realize that moving somewhere "for work" does not mean you get to hike more. I'm currently on pace to finish the 14ers when I'm, er, 97. But thanks for a great mega-report!

    Cathedral Trail on Katahdin Question

Yeah, I love the MMG but something like "There is a trail. It is not long but very steep. Exposure and weather could be a factor. There are many rocks." would about describe it. :D

    Cathedral Trail on Katahdin Question

Just my $.02: I really hate exposure, but Cathedral is one of my all-time favorites. Your assessment quoted here is spot-on, I think. I think it's class 2+ but not 3 unless icy or something. I have done the KE and had much more in the way of bad adrenaline and "sewing-machine leg" than I did...

Maine 4000 footer to save for last?

weather trumps choice of peak I prefer Abraham as my favorite ME peak, because we hiked it in January when the visibility was 100 miles (Washington, check... turn 180 degrees... Katahdin, check) as opposed to the 3 or 4 in haze in August on the Bigelows. We hiked Isolation as my final NH4K and...

    Colorado hiking maps?

Yeah, I didn't mention the elk because they are like squirrels up there. On the other hand, if you come from a land with few squirrels, they are interesting! Moose, on the other hand, are rarer. Unless you go to Alaska, I guess. Indeed it is. I think the high country got its second or third...

    Colorado hiking maps?

If you're in downtown Denver at all, go to REI and check out the huge map selection. (huge selection, not huge maps. :)) The people they have to help you at the map desk know a lot too. Some of the available maps are better than the Nat Geo selection, depending on where you're going, especially...

    boot suggestions appreciated -wide forefoot

duck feet I have duck feet- large size, narrow heel, wide forefoot/toes- and found for my last two pair of boots that the higher end full-leather Merrells (used to be called Wilderness) were the only ones that fit me. Only thing is that was a few years ago and I think Merrell has gone through...

Baby Backpack Recommendations for the Trail

From experience with two kids who got real big, real fast (like 20 lbs at 6 mos of age and almost 30 by a year, they're now 11 and 13 yo and dwarf their friends): many kid carriers are quite wimpy in the suspension department. I'd look for the same kind of suspension system that would let you...

    Feather Pile?

Yeah, I'm thinking predator from above since no sign of ground trauma or pieces of something left over. I think carnivorous mammals are messier, certainly heavier! First time my kids saw one of those (we had a lot of sharp shinned hawks) they said "somebody ate one of our birds all gone- I mean...

    Sunscreen - friend or foe?

    1. Unfortunately, yes. 2. Not much. A derm lecture I went to last year mentioned "both hands, for 10 minutes." That sounds kind of low to me, but if you're outside at all with a little exposure, you're likely fine. It amazes me how many people are vitamin D deficient. One more symptom of nature...

    Presi backpacking

Yeah, don't try the Oakes side, done it twice (fool me once, shame on...:o) and it's too far/steep to a campsite. More sheltered, but better to just grunt on to the Perch.
