    Sleeping bag age?

My favorite sleeping bag is a North Face 5º down bag I purchased new in about 1993 or '4. It still works very well, though I haven't tried it in much below about 15-20 in the past few years. Ratings were different back then. Washing is also good to get out all the sweat and things like...

    Hi!

For sure, agree about the many answered questions here. I'm heading out on a backpack next week, with a route I found here that someone posted about like 15 years ago. It came up in a search for info about one of the places on the way, and the route was a creative idea I hadn't considered. And...

Franconia Ridge Loop - sneaking a peak at the new trail work

Last year I hiked in a few places in Colorado including a very popular trail to several lakes (Bear, Nymph, Haiyaha, Emerald), probably the most popular spot in Rocky Mountain NP. The lower part of the trail just out of the parking lot was paved in blacktop. Definitely took away from the...

Hiker dies in VT attempting to cross flooded stream

That's a sad outcome for everyone involved. I'd seen the press release a hiker was missing but hoped it wouldn't come to this.

    Be prepared

I recently hiked a bit of the Susquehannock Tr in the Hammersley Wild Area of north central Pennsylvania. Really nice area, if you're ever out that way, or are looking for something different. As I neared the road at the end of the day hike, having seen no one all day on a fine summer weekday...

All Trails Strikes again - Hiker rescue on Osceola

Here's another mistake, the non-existent "Lakes of the Clouds Trail": https://www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/us/new-hampshire/lakes-of-the-clouds-trail At least they got it right that both Lakes and Clouds are plural!

All Trails Strikes again - Hiker rescue on Osceola

Similar to how folks might blindly follow the directions given by a navigation app in the car, and do something dumb like drive into water (which recently happened in Hawai'i - twice, apparently). Here, the hiker was probably trying to follow a track on their app, and went off trail. Meaning...

    Blueberries - Its time

Last year we hiked up Pitcher Mountain to check out the fire tower, a day hike along the Monadnock Sunapee Greenway (a wonderful trail). There are extensive overgrown blueberry bushes around the summit, and as it happened the berries were in that day. My gf and I ate as many as possible and took...

Historic Hiking Shelters of the WMNF

So I'm learning. Recently I visited the Appalachian Trail Museum at Pine Grove Furnace SP near Carlisle, PA. Across the street is the place where thru hikers attempt the half-gallon ice cream challenge. It's a lovely little museum, with Benton MacKaye's desk, on which he penned the proposal...

Willey / Bond Ranges, 14-16 July

I wonder what accounts for this illusion? There's a local bike shop here in CT with a ride called, "Uphill Both Ways." Somehow related.

Historic Hiking Shelters of the WMNF

Good morning, all. In planning some backpacking for next month, I've been searching around for info on shelters, and info on sites of former shelters in the WMNF. Came across this interesting PDF of a presentation slide show, prepared in 2016 by Sarah Jordan, Heritage Program Manager with USFS...

The latest in long a line of proposals for Millinocket

Sorry I don't recall about that, I just remember looking over the beer list. Maybe call them? And have a great visit!

The latest in long a line of proposals for Millinocket

Good question about power in the area, have no idea about that. Don't recall hearing generators at Knife Edge last month, and we sat outside to eat (no dogs allowed in the building). River Drivers Restaurant down on the lake indeed looks like a fine establishment. Once tried to dine there and...

The latest in long a line of proposals for Millinocket

We first went to Knife Edge Brewing in Oct 2022 when it had just opened -- like a month or so before. It's definitely a bit off the path, and up a gravel road. Worth a visit for the brews and pies!

The latest in long a line of proposals for Millinocket

New England Outdoors Center (NEOC) has recently rebranded as Ktaadn Resorts, using the Thoreau / Penobscot spelling: Ktaadn Resorts This also includes the River Drivers Restaurant on Millinocket Lake, and the new (as of 2022) Knife Edge Brewing and wood fired pizza, just up the hill a few...

    Campground Hosting

My gf/partner's dad is a retired firefighter from northern Maine. He lives at a campground up there for close to half of the year, doing mechanical maintenance, and also working around the area maintaining a bunch of campsites on logging company lands. Not as a host; I don't think he has to deal...

Franconia Ridge Loop work has started

Found a story in the news about it: Restoring the Franconia Ridge Loop Trail to deal with increased popularity and severe weather Published: 7/8/2023 ... At the project site on Old Bridle Path, [Matt Moore, a trail crew manager] assessed a large boulder parked in the center of the trail. Hikers...

    Water crossings 101

Couple weeks ago I chatted with a thru hiker in the Hundred Mile of Maine, she said she removes her socks and liners from her trail runner shoes before crossings, doing them with bare foot in liner-less shoe. Haven't tried it yet.
