    49 out of 50

Only 49? I though that Mauna Kea had snow in the winter. Although somewaht sparse wouldn't that qualify as 50 states with snow on the ground? I've had a lontime goal to ski and dive in the same day....and Hawaii was the location for it...is my dream dead from Global Warming?:D

I didn't see that you posted this. Was this in response to to the "Avalanche Airbags" posting? I don't watch TV...more time to hike...even at night.

    Barre Falls Dam 1-22-10

Started at the parking area on Route 122. All of the roads were open, but I only saw 1 car going down any. The roads were all packed ice/snow and microspikes would have been handy if I had brought them. Had crampons, but felt they would be overkill on the trails. The bushwhacks (i.e. woods...

    Greylock Hike 1/23/10

My limited experience: The North route over Bellows Pipe Trail then up the Trail West past the Bellows Pipe Shelter to join the AT headed South over the summit. This trail was mostly easy grades except for the short section before you join the AT. The lower part is over nice gentle and wide...

    Nuts Online

Been using Nutsonline for a while. Nice selection of Kosher fruits and nuts at reasonable prices (their dried mango prices are just about the lowest I've found). My only gripe is that the ziplock packages will "delaminate" at the zipper requiring a new storage bag (or an outer layer). Overall...

    Help finding up-to-date trail conditions

This is an awesome idea...not just the aggregation of the reports, but mapping each one is kind of handy. The other item I really like is the overlay of the approximate snow depth. Very good info to have when planning how far I want to go on a trip. The topo looks like it will be helpful for...

    NH48 Winter Record Attempt 1/16/10 -

Mats, when I met you on Isolation in October (I had just come down and you were going up) you said you were doing the grid. So the "grid" is now all 48 in a week?....crap, how am I supposed to keep up with that. Good luck on this quest and may you break the record with the wind at your back and...

    Avalanche Airbags

Imagine if you will: two friends skiing on a clear and cold day down a pristine slope. They have done the "avalanche airbag" fist bump and are otherwise well prepared for their backcountry ski day. The snow is smooth. They two whoop and holler on their joyous ride down.....little do they know...

    Why Do We Buy Fleece

Wool Jacques Costeau used to dive with a wool watch cap...I've tried it and it works very well and is much less restrictive than a thick neoprene hood. Once I saw how well that worked I've been a big fan of wool for cold weather where I might get wet.....which is pretty much anytime I'm outdoors.

Lowell Dracut Tyngsboro State Forest 1-6-10

Roads are hard pack snow and wide from all of the snowmobile and foot traffic. Most of the trails had shallow snow and/or were well packed. Even in the woods the snow did not require snowshoes, but Spikes were helpful going up and down the hills.

    Sawyer Mtn 12-30-09

The trail is decently consolidated to the summit. 3 to 4 inches of light powder cover the track. Water crossings are frozen or easily crossable.

Keeping snacks & gadgets handy & warm on winter hikes.

Body Heat I bring mostly dried type foods, but if a Snickers bar gets too cold it turns into a rock anyway. In these cases I just put the snacks near my body; pants pockets, inside my outer coat etc. that is usually sufficient to keep it non-frozen.

    Ossipee Mtn. 12-29-09

Trail to the summit is well packed snowmobile trail. Icy in a few spots. Barebooted up with no trouble; used microspikes for the way down. The tower summit area was well packed down and blown off. The rock summit area was deeper crusty snow but not difficult to bareboot.

Advice for a winter bag purchase

I've found that once you read the reviews you have about all you're going to know until you try it yourself. I have the NF Tundra and I like how it packs small, is light and it has kept me warm with long undies on nights down to 10 degrees (not including windchill) on a few occasions. I'm not...

    Microspikes vs. 6 pointers

I find the microspikes to be handy for wet rocks, light rime ice, leafy trails and walking across a frozen body of water. These uses are overkill for crampons. I have used microspikes in all 4 seasons. Since the microspikes are attached via silicone stretchy elastics and because they have small...

Bald Knob, South and North Baldface 12-23 and 12-24 09

Up to Bald Knob via Slippery Brook Trail. Trail was broken out all the way to the Bald Knob Trail, then only the moose had broken the trail and did a decent job of it. Took the Baldface Circle Trail down to Baldface Shelter....that was um...interesting. Trail was exposed at the top and...

    Mt. Pisgah 12-21-09

Another trip to test the new snowshoes. Weekend left varying snow deep and soft on the Westside thin on the East Side. Broken Trail on all of the marked trails (and even some unmarked trails). Snowshoes not required but helpful.

Lost hiker benighted on Saturday night

Interesting that they say he was "rescued", when "saw him the next morning" seems like a more apt description.

    Mt. Pisgah 12-17-09

Trails are packed thin snow, but now frozen into rock. Some of the stream crossings were still weak ice or still flowing (surprising given the temps). Microspikes were useful on the trails. Snow off trail is crunchy and only 3" deep in the shadier areas, exposed ground on the southerly facing...

    Berkshire Backpacking

non AT shelters in MA Greylock have at least 1 shleter that is not on the AT (Bellows Pipe Shelter) and there are shelters in Savoy Mountain State Forest (not near 90 though close to Route 2). Mowhawk Trail S.F, Monroe S.F. and Kenneth Dubuque Mem. Forest also have shelters. One of the other...
