    Following me is...

No One around I think this is what you meant (see inserted photo below because I'm still useless at getting pictures to go into the body of this reply) Following me is human hiker swimming (on a hike) in another season besides summer.

    Cabot 9-6-09

I pulled up to the gate at the fish hatchery at 9:30pm on Friday (9/11). The gate was "locked" as described by 1happy above. I was able to open, pass through and close the gate again. The locking pin is set up in such a way that it doesn't look like they could lock the gate even if they wanted...

    Ways to Hike the 48

OK so this is a related question: Does each 48 have to be unique for each "list" completion. IOW if I do my original 48 and I was wearing yellow for 10 of them, do I get credit for 48 in yellow by doing only the other 38 wearing yellow? I guess the more realistic scenario is if I do 12 peaks...

Mt washington twice in a day

Excellent hike...cool and unorthodox...hmmm maybe this could be a new thread?

    Hancocks 8-30-09

Hancock Notch and Lower Cedar Brook were surprisingly easy/not puddled although still muddy in a few places. The Brook Crossings were still easily rock hoppable and/or shallow. The North and South Link Trails were almost free of puddles and mud. The connector between the peaks was OK, but there...

    What's in your hike plan

Thanks for all the inputs. FWIW, I hike solo and I bushwhack not infrequently. I'm not afraid of the boogeyman, but I consider the plan to be one of those items that "I'll-never-use,-but-boy-it's-nice-to-have-when-you-need-it". As others have mentioned, I'm not sure if it causes more angst with...

    What's in your hike plan

Like a good dooby, I send my wife and my in-laws a hike plan whenever I go out hiking. I typically send something like this: I'll be hiking in Franconia Notch and parking at the Lafayette Campground for this hike. The route is .4 miles up Lonesome Lake Trail up to the junction of the Hi-Cannon...

Who goes around (without a compass), comes around

I guess if you like loop hikes this is a good thing:D Bushwack out and eventually you will naturally loop back to where you started....and we've been spending all of this money and compasses and GPS.

    Car Camping near the Beach

There are 2 nice campgrounds around Freeport ME. Orrs Island and Hermit Island Campgorunds (find the online- Google the names). There is another at Smalls Point a little further up (I forget the name), and all three are right on the water. I have to check my Maine Island Trail book, but I think...

    The Ideal Canister

Canister Design The canister on Vose Spur has a hole in the bottom and is of similar design to what you have sketched. It did not have a stand-off screen on the bottom and the contents were soaked. That said: CPVC (chlorinated PVC) is grey so it would blend into the woods better (or stand out...

    Stepping up on Whiteface 8/5/09

I saw this work in progress on July 25th and it looked like a major construction effort. They had a thick rope and "comealong" connected to trees about 50 feet apart and you could see they had moved some serious boulders. The area looked pretty trashed from rock moving and stomping around...it...

    sweat gets in my eyes

Simple solution Turn head to left...place left eye socket on rounded part of shoulder...rub sweat from left eye...repeat this process with the right side. If you do this before it gets in your eye you are better off. My shoulders are always nearby (i.e. I haven't been on a hike where I forgot...

    Berries 2009

Berrys, but no bears Mount Watatic (MA has awesome blues at the summit. Yesterday the Blueberries on the Blueberry Ledge Trail on Whiteface were abundant and decent, but the Raspberries were yummier. No bears though:(

Swimming holes on the AT in the Mahoosucs

Swimmin holes I love to go visit new swimmin spots, especially ones that are free and open use. I use http://www.swimmingholes.org/ to find spots and they list a few along the Saco and Swift rivers although I have not specifically looked at any right on the AT. In theory I'm not sure why you...

    Need CAR for backcountry roads

xB Love the mileage (~38 hwy/33 city) and the space (great rear seat legroom - on par with large sedans) with my 2006. The newer ones get lower mileage, but have more pep and space. Ground clearance is a major problem though. If I'm going rough roads I take the minivan.

    My Dog's Better'n Your Dog, My dog's Better'n Yours...

Not my dog - he belongs to the wife and kids I'm new here, but this is my sometimes hiking companion (on Blueberry Ledge - Whiteface). I've been reluctant to take him on overnights...he's always in the water, no matter how little or muddy and I'm not sure how he'll do with Bears and Moose...

little late Chocorua seemed to be a popular spot for fireworks viewing on Saturday Night...people stayed in the Liberty Cabin for the overnight.
