Marston Slide - Baxter State Park

Sounds like a fun trip up a different route - next time I see a sign in the middle of no where I will think there is some secluded abandon trail somewhere near by. Kudos for remembering something from that far back - I have trouble remembering what trail I took when I get back to my car.

On helping unprepared hikers, group hikes, and hike leadership

I think there are more unprepared hikers out there then there are prepared ones to give them advice. It's not always the novices though that are unprepared - there are many experienced ones out there that skimp on the essentials in effort to shed pack weight. I have been out with people who I...

    GPS Questions Part 2

There is evidence of some of these differences when the mileage on a new map doesn't match the mileage in an older guide book. Then in some instances the even older trail signs have a third milage that is different from the other two. Have seen this with some of the AMC Maine guides and maps.

Extreme Sledding in or near the Whites

We are heading to VT to do the Abraham and Ellen Traverse North to South so we can sled down Lincoln Gap Road - which side offers better sledding, the East side or the West side?

    Winter Baxter Expedition Advice

The entire route from the parking lot to the cabin at Chimney Pond is packed down by constant snow mobile traffic - unless there is a blizzard the day or two before there will be no deep snow to contend with. The entire Tote Road is open to public snowmobiles - the section of road between the...

    Winter Baxter Expedition Advice

Most of your questions have already been answered. Have made three trips in winter, two this year. Most important piece of advice - be prepared for a summit-less trip. We had great weather last year and got both Baxter and Hamlin in under clear blue skies. On our attempt for Baxter and Hamlin in...

Baxter Park Nesowadnehunk access in Winter

We are getting ready to go to Baxter State Park this week to stay at Nesowdahunk and called the office several times about the parking situation discussed here. What I got during the first couple of calls is similar to what has been mentioned here, while they don't prohibit parking at Williams...

Anyone planning an End Of The World Hike 12/21/12 ?

Have both a 12/12/12 hike and a 12/21/12 hike. Am taking a group on a 12/12/12 hike to #12 (North Twin) with the attempt to hit the summit at 12:12. If Haystack road is open and we hit South Twin it should be about 12 miles. We did an 11 mile hike on 11/11/11 hike to #11 (Eisenhower) but missed...

Yellow Yellow the famous High Peak Bear has Died

Sad news if you followed the adventures of this famous bear - she was shot by a hunter. We got to meet her and some of her cubs on our most recent trip to the Adirondacks. One of them tried to break into the Thule box on top of my Toyota Highlander. :(...

    4 Season List (Gridiot) Question

Have been working on the 115 X 4 (although I keep doing the ADKs in the summer so there is a serious flaw in my plan) and I use the the rule that the foot has to be back at the trailhead before the season "changes" in order for it to count in that season. Here is the date and time information...

Coe, Brothers, Fort Loop, Baxter Park, Maine, 8/13/2012

It wasn't the upper body that got whacked when we did this trip the last time, I remember my legs (mostly below the knee) getting shredded by those little bushes at the beginning of the trip when leaving from North Brother. Will be returning there in a couple of months and already dreading that...

    "Dana Design" Wet Rib

I had been looking for one of these for a while and had tried this and that to keep my stuff handy without having to stop and take my pack off, especially in the winter. I could only find used ones on e-bay since Dana Design stopped making them. It seems that the guy (Dana) from Dana designs...

    Spring near Cabot Cabin

I was wondering if anyone has checked out the spring located between the Cabot Cabin and the summit of Cabot? Planning an overnight trip of the Kilkenny and know the water sources in the Notches are there, but haven't seen anyone mention if this spring is actually useable. My hike to check the...

Better Late Than Never: Goose Eye, Mahoosuc Notch, Old Spec 5-27

Nice job on making do with what you had. Remember though (before others start bashing meetup here on VFTT) not all meetup groups are created equal. :D Yes, such a long hike should probably be started before 11 AM but what doesn't kill you will only make you stronger. :)

Man down (but not out) on fabulous 48 finish on N. (and S.) Twin

Nice job and great trip report. Been on a few winter hikes that had people get soaked and in all three spare clothes saved the day and allowed the trip to continue (all were towards the beginning of the trip). In the fall we used those blowdowns to cross and would have probably opted for that...

Hostel near Camel's Hump in VT

Awesome offer and may take you up on it sometime - this time may have a group with me and looking to get the name of a place for them too. We often use the White Mountain Hostel when in the Whites, The Maine Roadhouse when up in Rangeley Area, and the Keene Valley Hostel when in the Adirondacks.
