Hostel near Camel's Hump in VT

Heading to Camel's Hump and Abraham/Ellen in a couple of weeks and looking for an inexpensive (but clean) hostel or motel in the area.

    Wildcat pass required for hikers?

Seems to be a lot of people communicating with various groups - all kind of getting the same message though. So if I read this correctly ... hiking UP during operating hours doesn't require a pass ... hiking DOWN during operating hours doesn't require a pass as long as you check with ski patrol...

N.H. Conservation Officers Rescue Maine Hiker

I run into many times when hiking with others - the forecast says its going to be calm and warm. Only later do they realize that the forecast that they used was for the valley and not the summit. While the Mount Washington Observatory has some good information for the higher elevations I have...

    Owls Head 1-29-12

I've pretty much come to the conclusion that every group needs someone to be the slow one, and I don't mind filling that role. :D My second pair of busted lightnings too - returned the first pair a month ago and only have two hikes with the new pair. They instead of looking like an "I" they...

    Owls Head 1-29-12

Bad day for MSR Lightning Ascents - I bent the frame pretty badly on the climb but fortunately was still able to use them.

    Owls Head 1-29-12

Sorry about the crappy route on the Brutus Bushwhack. We turned left a little too soon (less than a tenth of a mile) so instead of going "over" the thick stuff we ended up in the middle of it. Never had done the route before so I had tried to plot it out by using descriptions and pictures of...

North & South Twin via Little River Road, N Twin Trail, and N Twin Spur Trail

January 29, 2012 Trail Conditions: Packed powder along the trail, crusted over powder of you stepped off trail. Was broken out to North Twin but looked like fresh snow had fallen at higher elevations - North Twin Spur Trail had to be broken out. Special Equipment Required: Used snowshoes...

    Twins, Galehead, Garfield Traverse, 1/7/2012

Another great report - heading there on Sunday. Was wondering about the N Twin crossing but it sounds like it was easy going. Maybe one of these days we can do a route first and you can use our trip report for your planning. :D

    Wildcat pass required for hikers?

In the interest of full disclosure it is my meetup group that has posted the sledding events that Bob is referring to. We had been told by ski patrol twice at Cannon and once at Wildcat that as long as the lifts were off and the ski area was closed they had no problems with us sledding down...

A Winter Adventure, Zealand - Bonds Traverse, 12/28/2011

Sorry about that Earl, that wasn't my intention. :( I love reading your write-ups because of the detail. I've removed my write-up and reposted it as a separate thread.

Hale, Zealand, and the three Bonds

Spent the day with Monica, Jeff, Karine, and Heather. On the trail at 5 AM - over the next 14 hours we hiked about 25 milesand climbed about 6,300 feet as we hit the summits of Hale, Zealand, West Bond, Bond, and Bondcliff. Snow on the ground and intermittent flurries but little wind and mild...

A Winter Adventure, Zealand - Bonds Traverse, 12/28/2011

Was wondering because there weren't any rocks visible to us - maybe they had been covered by that ice bridge. The bridge did seem solid but we moved quickly. :) My trip reports wouldn't be much to read - I remember one or two things about a trip once I've finished, and often those things aren't...

A Winter Adventure, Zealand - Bonds Traverse, 12/28/2011

Thanks for the trip report, as always found it useful in planning an adventure. We did Hale Zealand, and the Bonds on Friday. Started at 5 AM and over the next 14 hours hiked about 25 miles and climbed about 6,300 feet. Based on your trip we left the snow shoes in the car - definitely the right...

    Energy drinks.

My work schedule is unpredictable and there are times when I work all night before a Saturday morning hike. Have used 5-Hour Energy Extra Strength. It's a small container and seems to work.

    Missing backpack...

On Saturday Monica and I did a Pemi Loop but when we got home Sunday morning we realized that we were one backpack short of a full load. On Sunday morning (07/31) we were parked near the bathroom in the Lincoln Woods Parking Lot and may have set it outside the car and forgotten to put it back...

Yeah, saying it was only going to take a year seemed like quite a stretch - as evidenced by his current pace. Michael

    It's only ~ 12,500 miles...

Ran accross this while surfing the web - this guy is attempting to establish a new record of unassisted ultra-light long-distance backpacking. It will be the first ever, attempt of the “All-In Trek”. This involves solo hiking the four longest hiking trails in the United States, back-to-back...
