    Liberty Spring tentsite

Frankly, I had always thought, in our love for thru-hikers rivaling only Kent, CT, we had blocked off the entire AT through the Whites with a 200 foot barrier. Welcome to our world. If that's not true, and some of these sites were legal, hopefully it's not just some out-of-control caretaker or...

    Pemi Loop prep

For future reference: I've never seen Lafayette Spring dry. Some might still regard that as significant, but a very small % of all the way down to Greenleaf Hut.

Pemi Wilderness 2 night 3 day Hike Using AMC Huts - Suggestions?

It's one of the steepest climbs I've ever seen. And the descent down and onward from S Twin to the relatively level ridge is not trivial. I personally carry a very light pack even for long trips, and these OP folks will have only day-hut packs, so maybe you're right in that context. My advice...

Pemi Wilderness 2 night 3 day Hike Using AMC Huts - Suggestions?

You should plan a late end. It would be terrible to rush through, or be experiencing any time pressure at all, across the ridge. And the downhill and flat, while a nice pleasant stroll when you're relaxed, is a deadening chore when you're trying to make time or treating it like the hike is over...

    sleeping quilts vs bags

I very much agree, as a general principle. But during Summer in the Whites, the ground is not much of a heat sink. Currently I mostly use a neoair 3/4, but that's primarily for comfort. In the years before the neoair, I used a thermarest ultralite 3/4 with the quilts without incident. In both...

    sleeping quilts vs bags

Quilts are wonderful. I mostly use a Jacks 'r' Better Shenandoah in the Whites late June-Early September. Just under a pound. There's a lot of variation in nighttime temps during the Summer. And, in a given mass of air, lots of variation due to cloud cover, altitude, micro-climate conditions at...

    West Bond Whack

I've done it from the bottom up. You might consider going on to the outer WB peak before descending. Even so I swam through lots of scrub between there and the exposed rocky knobs (a great spot though). A little below there the terrain opens up nicely for awhile above a wide, dry stream bed...

Anyone been up Grand Teton in mid June?

Mid July it was T-shirts and shorts much of the time but fleece and rainjacket at times in the wind, particularly on breaks. Also got hit with some cold rain and sleet and it was nice to have some down under the rain jacket as we hunkered down. At this time of year I'd want some go-to core warmth.

Fording the E. Branch of the Pemi?

Just a bit upstream on the North Fork the river widens out and there is a nice shallow, slow moving crossing. There's pretty much a trail to it, starting just before the Thoreau Falls Trail bridge. It goes out to and follows the bank, cuts into the woods, crosses a clear area then follows a...

Grand Canyon End of April into May

Hope you made out OK. I just got back from a very extended mostly off-trail. Lots more gnats than I'm used to this time of year, and mosquitoes in that period just before the bats come to the rescue. By second week in May or so the bugs are usually mostly gone but late April there are always...

Rumors about Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal

I will. I really will. You are absolutely right to say that. But you can't even begin to imagine the self-restraint I have already exercised. EDITED TO ADD: I think my basic message has been to learn about this person and the Pemi hiking issues through where (admittedly diffuse) searches will...

Rumors about Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal

She has fans here, and their views have legitimacy from a certain perspective that I frequently share. I suspect I would be banned if I specifically named and accused her. There is a single person responsible for the recent damage and the future threat to backpacking in the Pemi. Do a google...

Rumors about Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal

In any action you take, any letters, emails, petitions, personal appearances, it is important to target appropriately. There have been no real enemies of White Mountain hikers for half a century or more. We have one now. Get this individual out of the picture, and things get back to normal. I'm...

    Shuttle Connection Lincoln

Stops for about half an hour in downtown Lincoln before going on to the Woods parking lot. A bit of a pain but does give you a chance for one last infusion of grease and bulk before a long trip.

    Shuttle Connection Lincoln

    My opinion here.

Rumors about Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal

I think we need whatever allies and support we can find. We are faced with an outlier with no connection to White Mountain backpacking. Her enemies are our friends.

    GPS, Maps, and cameras ILLEGAL

I live in an extended household of lawyers, but nobody's home right now. The question I have for tonight is, if a landowner and a friendly cop and prosecutor tried to nail you with this law, and you brought an English professor in as an expert witness to prove, semantically and by the logic of...

    GPS, Maps, and cameras ILLEGAL

Doesn't apply, since Google didn't enter the property to gather that data. Google is safe from prosecution by New Hampshire! If the data about the property is incidental background and not the purpose, I think the photograph is OK. But if a wedding photographer supplied those pictures to, say, a...

    GPS, Maps, and cameras ILLEGAL

It is possible that English is not the primary language of the bill's authors and that the bill does not really mean what it says it means. Perhaps photos, GPS tracks, and mapped features will turn out not to be data. Or perhaps "person" in 7c1-1 means something other than person. Bad person...
