    Weekend Rescues in the whites

I agree very much with you, Kyle. There's no substitute for good mentoring in the mountains. Happy to say, as you've seen, there are plenty of people here ready, willing and able to mentor new hikers, both on-trail and off. They are an invaluable resource.

    Weekend Rescues in the whites

Seriously? You wrote: "People who are entering the world of hiking now, come from a new perspective. As soon as something is a little off, dial 911," and "I guess this generation has no hero's." I "quoted" you, in a clear paraphrase, including "whippersnappers," not a run-of-the-mill word...

    Weekend Rescues in the whites

Your blanket condemnation of "kids these days" was the point of objection. Don't seem to be stepping up to defend that notion, so maybe you concede the point. I agree with you about the ethic of individual responsibility and said so in the passage you quote by agreeing to your earlier post...

    Weekend Rescues in the whites

I agree with the thrust of your post previous to the above, but respectfully submit that a "whippersnappers these days are all soft" take is counterproductive. Some are, some aren't, and that truth spans across all ages. The job of educating the young - whether in age or experience - is...

How's this for a White Mountain summer place in Jefferson NH

True, Gorham or Lincoln would be better. But I bet its view is great.

Would be an interesting venue for a hostel. Lot of TLC needed first.

Belknao Carriage Road Closure - Set Date or Weekend Each Year?

Well, TWB, it was inconvenient for me, but I appreciate that it's a consistent date, year over year. Would be nice if that were posted at the FB page and at your very nice site. I'm sure most users of the trails are repeaters and locals, but many of us are not. Good to keep us "outsiders" in...

Belknao Carriage Road Closure - Set Date or Weekend Each Year?

Ok, thanks - I see that on October 27, four weeks ago, you posted on NETC that the gate closing date for the year this year is November 15. It's too bad I didn't go back through those several old trail reports on the mountain - face palm. At least you posted at NETC about the seasonal closure...

Belknao Carriage Road Closure - Set Date or Weekend Each Year?

I had hoped to do a quick hike up Belknap Sunday, as the weather in the higher mountains further north was not to my specs for a hike up Willey or East O - too wet and slick, the forecasts being belied. Was hoping to hit the summit later afternoon and catch some late-opening views and get back...

Old Trails and Routes on Mount Cardigan

We have a beloved mountain like that in CT called Sleeping Giant. Small in stature, but varied terrain with lots of beautiful rock formations. Over 30 miles of trails - I've hiked all but a mile or so. Rewards multiple visits. I look forward to getting back to Cardigan for some more poking...

    Tecumseh view clearing

Who's Brad? I read those posts, per your suggestion, among many, in your dozen-or-so answer post. Wasn't clear to me, hence the question. Thanks for the continued dialog. Learning!

Old Trails and Routes on Mount Cardigan

Thanks for sharing your story, Craig. I'd guess zigs and zags of the old road account for many of the "side trails" I saw. Have long enjoyed the UNH topos. Such a great resource!

Old Trails and Routes on Mount Cardigan

Thanks, Becca. Is there a good place online to scour old trail maps? I'm salivating at the prospect. :)

    Tecumseh view clearing

Well, Randy, I admire your energy and intensity. For all your effort in the most recent post, though, you don't answer the simple question: where is the "recent cutting" to which you referred earlier? At the summit? Somewhere else?

Old Trails and Routes on Mount Cardigan

I hiked Mount Cardigan via the West Ridge Trail yesterday. Seemed like there were a lot more old trails and routings along this route than you usually find out in the woods, even on a popular mountain. I wonder if anyone here has made it a project to explore some or all of these trails. Seemed...

    Tecumseh view clearing

I've read complaints about some of these in this and other threads here. Not sure if they've been taken to the USFS, but they been noted here at Views. What recent cutting are you talking about? Several people have said, to me personally or here in these fora, that the hacking at Tecumseh...

    Tecumseh view clearing

I wholly agree, DayTrip, though I'd oppose clearing a new view in the woods on a wild summit even if duly authorized by the USFS.

    Tecumseh view clearing

"As close as possible in such places," is the key phrase. There's no road over that wooded summit, only a footpath, and now, a hacked view. The valley where the roads run is not such a wild place. Keep the roads up, they're already built. And the footpaths are minimally intrusive. Do you support...
