Starr King Trail: Are There Cliffs Affording Good Southward Views Near Trail?

That southwesterly view, right on trail, was pretty grown in in July.

Starr King Trail: Are There Cliffs Affording Good Southward Views Near Trail?

Interesting. I didn't see much of an opening back that way. Presumably that would lead to a north or NE directional view. The possible cliffs I'm talking about face south.

Starr King Trail: Are There Cliffs Affording Good Southward Views Near Trail?

Hiking Starr King Trail this summer, I was tempted, by on the ground observations and by Google Earth, to look and see if there are views to be had, couple hundred yards east of the chimney in the old clearing, about 100' south of the trail. Per GE, it looks like there's a sharp drop-off there...

Is it possible to be a long-term hiker without resorting to lists?

The AMC Catskill Guide is pretty good, but not a match for the White guide, esp when combined with the 4000-Footer book. The Connecticut Forest and Park Assn, which maintains our 800+ mile blue-blazed trail system, puts out excellent Walk Books, west and east, which rival the WMG in quality and...

    # of New England 50 Finest finishers

Congrats! I ticked off #11 couple weeks ago with Mt. Ellen. Such outstanding views from its upper reaches, on a singularly beautiful day.

Southern Vermont Backpack Options 3 day/2night

How about park at Stratton-Arlington Road, aka Kelly Stand Road, where A.T./L.T. crosses it near Stratton Mtn. From there, you could hike south, up to Glastenbury Mtn, stay at Kid Gore, take in sunset views from firetower at one of Southern VT's highest peaks. Next day, hike back north to...

Bidding a sad farewell the Land Water Conservation Fund

Something tells me we've not seen the last of the LWCF. I agree with much of what you have to say, Stan, probably most. My concern would be cases where "local control" out west has correlated - as I gather, not a student of these matters - with no-fee grazing and very low charge timber...

Bidding a sad farewell the Land Water Conservation Fund

Isn't this less of a matter of the LWCF and more one, generally, of federal lands management and policies? Getting rid of the former as punishment for differences over the latter is arguably akin to throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Of course it could be that R's in Congress who made...

Bidding a sad farewell the Land Water Conservation Fund

I think it unfortunate that the LWCF was allowed to lapse and hope it will be reinstated before long. Understand and respect concerns about local vs. federal control, but think this vehicle has likely done a lot more good than harm over its life.

That's a cool story. Part of me wants to go that way, but part of the enjoys the collecting aspect.

Cool Mountain Country Trivia and Tidbits

Good question. Maybe Carrigain to Z and Mitzpah? Maybe from Mount Tom's northwest and southeast summit viewspots, though not the exact same location. I didn't look for Mitzpah from SE spot so can't say. Pretty awesome view of Z Hut from NW spot. Maybe likewise for Willey, but I haven't been...

Cool Mountain Country Trivia and Tidbits

There's these pretty-well-known bits about my family's namesake (in which I wish I had a stake, but don't), Stratton Mountain, VT. It's the place where, as the stories go, the ideas of the Long Trail and later the Appalachian Trail were first conceived, and where, as well, the sport of...

Cool Mountain Country Trivia and Tidbits

Thanks, Tom, will visit that page more than a few times, I expect. Hadn't heard, Randy, of "the willies" or "willeys" originating from that famed calamity. Learn something new every day! Such terrible misfortune that they perished and their house survived, because of the big boulder.

    The Rains Came

We got 1-3 much-needed inches here last two days of September in Connecticut, all soaking into the thirsty ground, so minimal flooding concerns. We're still half a foot or more behind for the year. That deficit may be made up in the next several days. Has it been more severe in other areas? Any...

Is it possible to be a long-term hiker without resorting to lists?

+1 The notion of conquering a mountain is facially absurd as I see it. Communing with it, visiting it are more like it. I'm sure others join me in this: out on a hike, of whatever mountain or trail of whatever dimension, I experience each trip as it comes and for the most part try and let...

Cool Mountain Country Trivia and Tidbits

Thought it would be fun to start a thread where we can share random, interesting tidbits about the mountains of the northeast here. Doubtless the many people of great experience and knowledge of the hills here will have a fun thing or two to share. I'll start: Of all the townships in White...

Total lunar eclipse, Sun, Sept 27 -- Mon Sept 28

I could've done that, didn't think I'd need to, wished I had. Argh! Lots of nice pics though of the orb going into eclipse. I was at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven, which was a neat place to watch it - several others came there, too, and the police let us stay, even though the park closes at...
