    Snow-free trails 2015?

Not only is the Long Trail from Lincoln Gap to Mt. Abraham snow-free, it is dry but for areas of seepage. I trekked north past the summit for about 100 yards and saw one patch of snow by the big sign just north of where the LT emerges from the trees headed up to the summit. Stopped just after...

    Nat Geo piece on Everest

Very good piece. My thought was that, for a year or two, the only missions up Everest should be clean up missions, where no one summits, and the whole point is to haul out as much accumulated refuse as possible. That might make the mountain a bit happier. Going forward, there might also ought...

    Need Catskill trip-planning advice

I've done day hikes of Slide and Hunter, and that's it in the Catskills for me. From driving the Kaaterskill Gorge, east of Tannersville on 23A, it's very beautiful. The high falls are in that area. A day exploring all around that area would be fun, though you'd have a lot of company.

"Best" Peaks To Hike In VT And NY

For me, I've just enjoyed Vermont and its people, and I love its green, mountainous beauty. It is quite different from its "twin" state to the east, each with its own charm and selling points. I get the idea that for a less populated, good hiking experience, hitting some of Vermont's lower...

"Best" Peaks To Hike In VT And NY

I second the motion on Ascutney and Stratton. Ascutney, though shorter than Stratton, is much tougher. Both are civilized mountains and both have superb views improved by fire towers. I'd say do A via Wethersfield right after a good rain - it has a beautiful, tall waterfall about halfway up. As...

"Best" Peaks To Hike In VT And NY

DayTrip: You may already be familiar with the University of New Hampshire's collection, posted online, of historic USGC topo maps of New England and New York. They're an excellent resource. If new to you, you can find them here: http://docs.unh.edu/nhtopos/nhtopos.htm Also, Sam's - the...

"Best" Peaks To Hike In VT And NY

PS: you could probably get both Slide and Hunter in the Catskills, which are easy, in the same day. The village of Phoenicia, about halfway between, has excellent food offerings. I haven't gotten to Mansfield yet, but I found Camels Hump particularly gorgeous.

Snow Pack Melt Predictions and Guesses for 2015

Update: my May 8 south-facing guess is looking pretty good. North-facing may be too late. Way too early to judge on Tuck's & Jeff.

"Best" Peaks To Hike In VT And NY

Day Trip: You might enjoy a there-and-back of Pico and Killington, starting and ending at the Inn at Long Trail, which I enjoyed very much the time I visited it. Sherburne Pass Trail up from the Inn, which is at the height of land on Rt 4, then a side trip to Pico, on to the A.T., up to Killi's...

    Animal Encounters on the Trail

Here are some photos of the young bear in action this past Sunday, along the opposite shore:

    Animal Encounters on the Trail

My friend and I saw our first bear on trail today - and on our first hike together, at that! It looked to be about two years old, I'd guess. A small adult, on the east bank of the Housatonic River in North Kent, CT, opposite the Appalachian Trail, where we were hiking, very close to Kent Falls...

Snowing and accumlating in Gorham today

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say we're done in the 90% of CT that's below 1000', for this season. Might get another round at our higher elevations yet. And I could easily be wrong. Hope not!

Snowing and accumlating in Gorham today

More reports at work of snow early yesterday morning. It was close to freezing here then, so not much chance to melt. And Chris, it can come from higher up in the sky as frozen and stay that way until it hits the ground sometimes, so long as the column of air a bit warmer than freezing is not...

Snowing and accumlating in Gorham today

I didn't see it myself, Mike, but I've heard from you and others reports of snow in CT yesterday. The latest in my three decades here. May's the record - we're pushing it!

Follow Up Story on Kate Matrosova

Sounds like you did come across them. It seems clear the rationale for her last hike, and it's a shame that the mighty winds swept her away. You get the idea that, had they not, she'd've been one of the great ones we'd've been reading about for decades to come. Sometimes it's a narrow divide...

Follow Up Story on Kate Matrosova

The discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of hiking solo vs tandem or in a group has been I believe a useful excursion. It bears repeating, though, that, all other things being equal, Kate with a small experienced group with shelter and sleeping bag provisions, blown off trail as she...

    AT in VT

If you want to bag a VT 4K or two in mud season, you could do Killington via the gravel service roads of the ski resort, if they allow that - that'll probably depend on how late the resort is open. Perhaps a similar hike at Mts. Ellen and Mansfield - I don't know those peaks, so can't speak for...
