slide show venues in Boston - NE area ?

West Hartford, CT has an active and busy REI which enjoys hosting events like this. Let me know, and I'll be happy to contact them about this. I'm sure they'll want a month or two of lead time.

    Outdoor movie thread

Yeah, the Everest film is both beautiful and gripping. What a horrific and fascinating story. Back to the K2 film, the statistic comparing the number of summits of that peak in a season versus Everest was eye-opening. I wonder what those stats are for Annapurna, which, per Ed Viesturs, is...

I watched and enjoyed the K2 film B lists above - beautifully filmed and well done. The Alps from Above is gorgeous, too.

    Vertigo

Yeah, I'm leaning, as it were, toward that. More information in such instances is better than less. Thanks for sharing your experience - I hope it doesn't recur for you.

    Vertigo

Thanks for your helpful feedback and info, everyone. Based on five days' experience, I believe my case is likely benign and hopefully temporary. Its worst when I transition to and from lying down, where it manifests about 80% of the time. It's of varying severity when I otherwise shift my head...

    Vertigo

Thanks for your feedback - absolutely going to see a doctor fairly soon if it doesn't resolve. I posed the question not from that standpoint, but rather working from the assumption, based on my readings and friend consults so far, that it might linger for a bit even if benign, as I believe it...

    Vertigo

Anyone have to wrestle with vertigo issues? I never have, until this weekend. Woke up Saturday and, upon sitting up, got a disturbing wobble of dizziness. So far, from the investigation I've done on the subject, it appears my case is relatively mild and, as I hope, may be a passing thing. But...

Garfield Attempt - Gale River Rd., Garfield Trail - 2/21

Congrats - always a good feeling to get one, especially after having to turn back before.

Garfield Attempt - Gale River Rd., Garfield Trail - 2/21

Looks to be right at the Garfield Trail/GRT junction. Beautiful. I hiked this, before the winter gate closure, the day after Thanksgiving two years ago with a few companions. There was a bit of snow about 3500', enough to be really pretty. Our day, the winds were whipping at the cold summit, so...

The damn thing of it is he once passed me on foot - and I was in my car on 93! (rim shot)

    missing hiker - Lancaster, NH

I could see a party of White Mountain novitiates in such conditions, with an Ed Viesturs-type leader, training for the Himalayans, fully geared up with sleeping bag and tenting and ready to bivouac or, more likely, to stay at Crag Camp or the Perch. Kate's outing, whether she knew it or not at...

    missing hiker - Lancaster, NH

Probably good for back-of-the-napkin purposes. The key to remember is that the force exerted by wind increases as the square of the speed. So the 75-ish gust which blew me over May 12, 2012 at the Lakes Hut is on the order of half the force of gusts Kate was dealing with. The speeds experienced...

    missing hiker - Lancaster, NH

Not bringing a sleeping bag and shelter, given the conditions, were also mistakes. She might well have turned back at the hut after summiting Madison, too, but she evidently was feeling great at that point and may not have been aware of how bad the weather, especially the wind, was going to...

Leaving only footsteps - think again: 100 meter 'death zone' on either side of trails

It's a New York Times opinion piece - very seldom will you find footnotes and formal citations in such pieces. The author does give a good amount of info naming and referring to the studies. Bet it wouldn't be hard to Google and find them. With respect, this is not a fair complaint. Also, it'd...

Leaving only footsteps - think again: 100 meter 'death zone' on either side of trails

I respectfully disagree. The author cites to numerous published, and therefore presumably peer-reviewed, studies and several concrete, and presumably somewhat verified, specific instances. It is an opinion piece, yes, but imo one which effectively marshals solid data in support of its position...

    missing hiker - Lancaster, NH

Thanks, pb. Is it clear the PLB signal was poorly resolved? Has it been ruled out that the hiker signaled from somewhere on the north slope of Madison, where the SAR team searched Sat, then made her way, downwind and behind JQ Adams, to the end of her trek, and that the variations in PLB signals...

    missing hiker - Lancaster, NH

I second that question. Not Without Peril refers to such reports with respect to many such missions. A lot of people would be interested, for better or worse.

Better than any technical fix, just don't go out in an epic winter storm.
