    Lauky's last hike

Sweet dog.... Of course I am very late to the thread here but also sending my condolences. I had met Lauky (and Ed!) on the trail a few years ago. Lauky was so recognizable with his little neckerchief and patch. I felt like I had met a celebrity! Sounds like he had some great miles along with...

    Rescues This Weekend?

Hi--I was one of the trail stewards last year, in its inaugural year. It was a fun way to give back a little and share some experiences and offer advice. I recommend it! It does make an impact for sure. We weren't there to wag our fingers and "shame" anyone, but were able to offer some guidance...

Monadnock Main Trails Continuous Hike -Planning

Looking at the map reminds of those old "Family Circus" cartoons where a dotted line shows the kids' trails all over the house and neighborhood. In other words it looks a bit manic, crazy, AND fun! --Carla

Follow Up Story on Kate Matrosova

Agreed "she thought wrong." That's what makes it seem like such poor decision making/planning from the beginning. Given the well-predicted ferocious weather, many people would have allowed for a generous margin of error on the timing and the conditions (or saved it for another day). I was...

Follow Up Story on Kate Matrosova

It is sad and tragic, and/but still hard to fathom why she went out that particular day on that particular hike. Unnecessary death. The quote from her friend, copied below, was striking. But I just find it hard to believe. This storm system was WELL predicted. How could she not have seen the...

beaver brook xc ski trails-anyone been there recently?

Hello all--any info on conditions of beaver brook xc ski trails (off 3). I have never skiied these trails but hope to this weekend. Are they pretty clearly/obviously marked? I saw that the parking lot was plowed, at least as of last weekend--no major snow in NH the past week, right? Thanks---...

Down Hill Biking on Mt. Moosilauke

Interesting article--I was curious about what kind of damage fat bike tires do on XC trails. Seems like a lot of Nordic areas are not keen on adding them to the mix of options. Personally I've never seen them in use. Interesting also that there is a defined etiquette, see...

    Presidential Traverse: Sunday March 1

Well, I know the weather isn't going to be like it was President's Day weekend, but reading your itinerary of course makes me think of that very recent death doing a similar hike (chronicled and discussed for 10 pages on VFTT, and many other places, as I'm sure you've seen). Yours is even more...

    missing hiker - Lancaster, NH

Totally agree...well put. Can you imagine getting that invoice? Also, who cares whether the husband was wealthy or not? Hate to see where that line of thought would go--charge more if the family is wealthy, charge less if they are not? Sounds grim.

    missing hiker - Lancaster, NH

Really good article. Not hyperbolic, not blaming. Poor woman--what an ordeal. Yes, faulty judgment, and her own fault, but what a sad way to go. Alone, fearful, freezing. Gives me nightmares to think of it. RIP....

A recipe for a downright nasty weekend

Me too, going up to Waterville, thinking to head back (to snowy Boston/Cambridge) mid-day. Will be freezing!!!!

    Storm Totals or ....

Yup--and we'll even be skiing on the streets down here in Cambridge and Boston. Yay--SNOW DAY!!!! ; )

    Bretton Woods

Crawford Notch Lodge--it's not super cheap, but comes with meals, and can be kind of fun and a little bit social, in a good way. May be booked on weekends so try a weekday and I think the prices are lower during the week too. You can then ski over to Bretton Woods....

Best winter route for Moosilauke ?

I don't have info on recent conditions, but I do recommend the Glencliff approach. It's mainly sheltered from the wind (until treeline of course), and it's just pretty and quiet and has a more isolated feel to it (at least in my opinion).

Snowshoer Found Dead on Mt. Rainier

Very sad and scary. I've been on Rainier during a snowstorm--really disorienting. (Well, a blinding snowstorm anywhere is disorienting.).
