Laugavegur Trek, Iceland - Logistical questions

I did ride the Icelandic ponies when I was in Iceland about 8 years ago. I went with a small operator right near Gulfoss, if I remember correctly. These rental places are easy to find--dotted all over. Icelandic horses/ponies are small and sturdy, not to mention super cute! As a Beantown swell...

    SABA, Dutch Highpoint - A hiker's paradise

So cool--I love those moon-like areas, and the towns just nestled in the mountain. This seems like a great place for a hiking vacation. Thanks for sharing with us!

favorite 3-4 hour hike near Campton NH

I will check some of these out on my maps. I've hiked a lot in the Sandwich wilderness area (including the peaks), but not seen Fletcher Cascade. And I've done Welsh Dickey and Carr, but will look into Three Ponds and Mt. Kineo. Would love to do something new/different. Thank you!

favorite 3-4 hour hike near Campton NH

Hi gang--I know some of you will have an opinion (ahem!). I have 3 hours to hike near Campton NH. Can you recommend some hikes that aren't super long, but still offer a workout of sorts? For reference, I hike about 2 miles an hour. I wouldn't want to drive more than 30 mins from Campton in any...

Flattop Mountain in RMNP is a great one, see http://www.rockymountainhikingtrails.com/flattop-mountain.htm Great views--gets you up to above 12,000, so some acclimation before does help. Re Angel's Landing, I have to admit that I just couldn't stomach it. I wouldn't say that I have a fear of...

snow counts?--can we get some reports from the field?

I know a few people reported in yesterday (via the "hype" thread) but I'm wondering if we can get some updates now that the dust has settled, so to speak? How are things looking on the ground for this weekend? If you have a moment, inquiring minds down here in the frigid but relatively snow-free...

What is this mountain seen from I-93N?

Ah! Well, if there are that many twists and turns, there are plenty of other candidates on the right! Well, good luck. Maybe somebody can post a picture from that location, and I'm sure you'll get your answer quickly.

What is this mountain seen from I-93N?

Can you give us some hints, like what town you are near at the 70.4 mile marker? Or other landmarks? If you're going north on 93, it's unlikely to be Lafayette, since that's on the right side of 93 going through the Notch. (Unless there are some major twists and turns on 93 N that would somehow...

Crank up the hype - 1 to 2 feet Snowfall Wednesday/Thursday

I was *hoping* someone would mention this imminent storm! I wonder too, how much will really fall up there. Here in MA we are supposed to get a couple inches, at most. We'll see...

    Trail Adopting 2014

Yes, I think it will be fun, and a kick! I figure I'm up there enough anyway, I may as well add another purpose, and give back a bit. Will go to training soon. And I even added this to my sig file--fun! :)

    Mount Garfield- 3/4/2014

Great first report! Garfield-- a lot of bang for the buck. Seeing your report confirms/validates my decision to go XC skiing on groomed trails today (Waterville) because of my suspicions that indeed the Garfield route would just be too hard packed. I really want to do that as a ski trip some...

XC Skiing the Pemi East Side (turning back on Thoreau Falls Trail) Feb 24, 2014

Oh Becca! I wish I had known it was you! you've been so generous with your advice on XC ski trails. Thanks again for breaking it out for me (and the annoying bare booters!) on the 15th. Of course you wouldn't have recognized me from my avatar picture. I'm not an otter--I wish I was that cute! ...

XC Skiing the Pemi East Side (turning back on Thoreau Falls Trail) Feb 24, 2014

Great report Becca! I was out early on the East Side trail last Sat Feb 15, right after a ton of snow earlier in the week. One other skiier ahead of me. As I was on the trail, before the washout, a couple were stomping through, bare-booting. I hope and prayed that they would turn back at the...

    Navigating Above Treeline In Winter

I would suggest taking a look at that thread in the New England forum regarding which trails are reliably packed out in the winter, and use those trails to get comfortable hiking in the winter. There are many peaks here that routinely get packed out, so you don't need to be as worried about...
