Etiquette of "Please take my picture"

If I want someone to take my summit pic, I always ask someone that I see is already holding a camera. Then I offer to return the favor.

    Crown of Maine

I'm planning a trip up north - way up north - to the crown of Maine, in the Fort Kent/Allagash area and I'm looking for some information from people who've been there. I'm going up for fishing, paddling, exploring, and hopefully hiking, although I'm not sure if there are any real trails up there...

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

Agreed. I think we've all read accounts of people doing really stupid things and getting lost in the mountains. I don't think this kids story is one of them. I agree with the law that allows reparations for searches but it may have been misapplied, or at least over-applied in this case.

Roughest roads in New England... how rough for how long?

I've never driven CVR but most of the forest roads I've driven would pass the Civic test, excepting Sandwich Notch Rd and Pond of Safety Rd (which I drove in a Civic and bottomed out). Also, the last mile of Elbow Pond Rd is deeply rutted too. A couple of roads in the north country can be testy...

    Need CAR for backcountry roads

That's a tough tradeoff you're asking for. An Outback is the only car I can think of that offers reasonable MPG and backwoods clearance. The Honda Fit is a great car but my '08 Civic bottomed out on the Safety Pond road last week. I'm sticking with my truck in the mountains from now on.

    New Restaurant in Twin Mountain

I was there last week. Decent sangwich but the best value is still the $5 footlong @ Subway. One in Lincoln, one in N. Conway. Lotta food for $5.

Mountain Lion in Pawtuckaway - Let the debate begin

Interesting point. But do they have anyone to "do it" with? If there are only solitary itinerant cougars roaming the woods, how do they find a mate? As Ray Charles sang, "It takes two to tango". :D I agree with John Harrigan that there are probably wolves in NH, ME. I'm still on the fence about...

Missing Hiker - Mt Washington Area

Yeah, I remember that. I dont remember the specifics either but I recall thinking that this guy might be faking it. I dont think there was any closure to that story, at least not that I'm aware of.

Arcadia Cracks Down on Rock Thieves

I saw some ******* loading up his SUV with rocks from the Swift River. He eventually stopped when he noticed I was staring him down. I think some people use them for landscaping in gardens and along walks and such. You can bet those rocks would cost a pretty penny if you bought them from a...

    Kilkenny Heights Development- Berlin/Milan

With the number of available properties in that area, I'm surprised that any developer would come in to build even more houses. Although I'm on the sidelines now, I've been shopping up north for a couple of years, mostly in Pittsburg, and learned a few things; 1) There's a ton of older...

Helicopter Tour of the ADK Park

I've always wanted to do this in the Whites. Whenever I drive by the airport in Whitefield I cant help but think that some pilot would be willing to take me up for an hour or two for $100 or so. Now if only I could find an extra $100...

The New Haiku - Sijo for Hikers?

Warm rain chills my bones. I'm sick of this. I can hike no more. The river overflows. No trout here. I cannot fish either. West Side Road, left onto Route Sixteen. Moat Mountain Brewery.

    S.T. #1 is a raccoon. S.T. #2 I'm not so sure about but I'll guess muskrat.

    Rain All Weekend

Nah, it wont be that bad this week. A shower or two, not much sun. The weather guy says that summer (85F+) starts Friday. Meanwhile, today is perfect pond fishin' weather. Temps support hatches, trout should be taking dries all day. A little wind impedes their vision. I'll be in Pittsburg by...
