First snow of the 2009/2010 season!

Autumn is my favorite season for hiking and just about everything else. I hope to have a nice long autumn before I have to break out the snowshoes! All in due time...

Grand Canyon - North Rim or South Rim?

I agree with Kevin. If the tourists on Mt Washington bother you, you would probably enjoy your trip more if you went to the north rim of the Canyon. The south rim in August is going to be hot and very crowded.

    Coyotes

That sounds right. I didnt get a real close look at the grey one but the brown one was definately a youngster. NH has no closed season for hunting or trapping coyote so I dont think we really need to put a bounty on them. Besides, who would fund the reward money? F&G? Don't think so.

    Coyotes

Two nights ago, we were awakened by a pack of coyotes very close to my house. This was the third time this week we've heard them, the other two times were in the morning. And twice today, I saw a solitary coyote trotting down the road in Nash Stream Forest. I saw a grey one heading in, then a...

    Moose on film

I had a great day in Pittsburg last week. I caught (and released) an obscene amount of brook trout, and had a couple of moose encounters to boot. I happened to be packing the videocam with me that day so I thought I'd share the results. The first meeting was while I was on Indian Stream. Two...

Pot farms run by 'bad guys' getting closer to tourist spots

I remember hiking in Glacier N.P. and getting an extremely strong whiff. All of us smelled it and there was no one else around twisting up. We all thought it was growth. Funny thing was that we all started craving Oreos 10 minutes later... Like whoa, dude...

Agreed. Felix Unger might use the blue bag. I'm Oscar Madison.

in support of a "Blue Bag Movement"

I wasnt talking about crapping on the trail - that's something alltogether different. I've never happened upon that, thank goodness. I'm sure your nurse is right, but I wonder what the science is behind that? I'd think that an average adult human carries less disease than an average adult...

in support of a "Blue Bag Movement"

With a few million animals crapping like there's no tomorrow in the very woods which we walk, I dont consider it to be much of an issue. What, their poop doesn't stink?? The only place I think might be an exception to this is at popular but "illegal" campsites. For instance, dont even think...

    I hiked with an umbrella...proudly

Hiking with an umbrella is okay as long as you dont twirl it or skip down the trail singing "Chim Chim Cher-ee". Nice pics, as usual.

Look before you "take care of business"

I must admit, that's the most unusual perversion I've ever heard of.

    Ken Burns - Nat'l Parks

I've been looking forward to watching it too. And what a lucky guy! He gets to travel to all the National Parks and makes a good living at it. Not bad work if you can get it.

Too many Bears Showing Up in Bethlehem, NH

"...and the town is proposing an ordinance against feeding wild animals." I'm surprised that laws like that aren't already in place. I was talking to a couple of US Forest Service employees in Jackson yesterday, and they said that the bears have been staying in the woods for the most part this...

Hiking up Mt. Madison on NHPTV

I met Willem Lange last month at a reading at the Robert Frost Museum in Franconia. He's a class act all the way. What a great guy. bob

Treking through boggy land - a query

When you wear the complete boots or waders, you wear them with a waist belt which should prevent you from drowning, if not falling over. But yes, you're right, even the most "breathable" models would be too heavy to hike miles with, especially in this weather.

Man Calls Helicopter for Injured Thumb

Y'know, the funny thing is that if you read the FTFC rules, you'll see that if you gain the summit of a 4000'er and need a helicopter evacuation on the way down, the summit still counts against the list. Check out the rules here

Man Calls Helicopter for Injured Thumb

One of the U-L reader comments for this story had the right idea - "SOme people just shouldn't go into the woods, others, perhaps, should be left there."

LR, got no complaints or red squares against me. I was just interested in the process that would make 3 squares drop to two. Maybe it's because I give more than I receive? No worries, I'll sleep well either way!
