    shelter on adams\allen trail

Glad to hear they are restoring the cabin. The cabin was the cabin for the fire observer for the fire tower. The cabin is one of the original standardized cabins built by New York State. It is the only one remaining of that design.

    Adirondack Loj Parking

Just an FYI, car camp at off of South Meadows Road while you still can. The road is set to be closed to vehicular traffic some time next year. DEC also plans to eliminate and relocate some of the campsites there.

    Great Range Traverse

Keep in mind that in that area there is no camping above 3500' except at designated campsites. I once camped off trail near Hedgehog. It wasn't much of a spot, more of a clearing in the blowdowns just large enough to fit a small tent. The only designated campsite on the range is between...

    How many are rock climbers?

I found out yes on this day: http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/470385462XqPHcw There's a reason the sequence doesn't continue. It's funny, but going down Saddleback doesn't bother me as much as going down Gothics (cable section; actually just above the cable section). PS I don't advocate...

    Any w46 peaks too dangerous?

No. I did hike the trail again, but in August. That was a much better trip.

    Any w46 peaks too dangerous?

Long post warning. Here was is my trip report from a hike up that trail in the winter of 2004. Hell Hike up Sawteeth We broke the trail up to the summit and the trail broke the spirits of two hikers February 22, 2004 After six hours of hiking, the push for the summit was no longer for fun...

    Technical printing question.

I did one a few years ago and ended up having them done at Kincos for about $20 for each calender. It ended up being cheaper than printing them off on my own printer.

    Technical printing question.

If it's already a jpeg there is no reason to convert it to tiff, unless you are planning on doing more post processing to the image that would require multiple saves. Both my jpeg and tiff prints from Mpix have come out fine.

    Technical printing question.

So far I've only printed on the Traditional E-Surface Paper. I prefer a matte finish on my photos.

    Technical printing question.

If you print it at 14" x 10.5" the image will be at 200dpi. This normally gives good quality from a inkjet printer. I've actually blown up photos from my 5mp camera up to 16x20 without any noticeable pixelization. I've been sending my print to Mpix.com, which will allow you to send files in...

    Foliage This Season?

I was up in Speculator this weekend and I'd say the leaves there were at about 50%.

    Olympus 770SW

If it uses the same Li-Ion battery pack as my C5060-WZ, don't worry about having it run out of juice during the weekend. I can get 2 - 3 weekend trips out of a single charge.

    Blast Furnace at Upper Works

They are preforming masonry stabilization repairs the the hot air stove (the brick structure on top) as well as adding a polycarbonate roof to help protect it from the elements. Over the next day or two a membrane roof will be installed over the furnace. All of this is part of a stabilization...

    LWJ-Gothics camping spots?

The Wolfjaws lean-to is definitely still there. I took a brake there last weekend. Be careful of the chipmunk. Don't take an eye off of him.

Boston Globe story on hiking boots

It’s really personal preference. I prefer hiking boots over cross trainers; I’ve never liked the way low top shoes feel on my feet. That doesn’t mean boots are better, they’re just what I like to use. The only real advantage I’ve found is that full leather boots offer more foot protection. I...

How many hikes did you do this Winter?

This winter was horrible for me. I only got 2 hikes in and only ice fished 4 times. :(

    What is this mountain?

Thanks for the help. Could you repost the link? It didn't work for me.

    What is this mountain?

I’m not sure if this is in the right section or not, if it isn’t my apologies. I took this photo this past summer on the Long Trail from I believe from below the summit of Buchanan Mountain near Jay. Does anyone know what the large mountain just right of center is? I labeled it Bear...

    Winter Scene - good bad?

I was wondering when someone would catch onto that. We were just playing around with the ice tools. We never found any good ice to warrant putting on crampons. :D

    Winter Scene - good bad?

Thanks for all the suggestions. Based on them I recropped the image. I also eliminated the small tree in Photoshop, but I’m more inclined to leave it in because I feel removing it the way I did is cheating and cheapens the image. I also took a picture from an angle to the right. While it...
