    Winter Scene - good bad?

I took this photo last weekend on Chimney Mountain. I was hoping to get some feedback about the shot. The photo was taken with an Olympus C5060WZ without any filters. f stop: F/4.0 exposure: 1/1000 sec. ISO: 80 focal length: 5.7 mm

    Chimney Mountain (Adirondacks) - 02/24/07

I took a short jaunt up Chimney Mountain on Saturday with Sherpaman. I’m not going to write a formal trip report because it was such a short hike, plus I’m lazy. Here are some quick notes: 1) The parking area isn’t plowed. We paid out $2 and parked near the stop sign. 2) The weather was close...

How bad are the bears at Marcy Dam?

That's a really good idea, although I think it may be a little too soon for the data to show anything. My guess is data would need to be collected over a broad time period (five years maybe?) that would include multiple summer seasons.

How bad are the bears at Marcy Dam?

The bears at Marcy Dam aren't too bad; they taste kind of like chicken. :p

    Tough Dayhike Suggestions

One of my hiking goals for this year is to try and do the 34.7mile “Big Hike” that Bob Marshall did in 1932. As many of you know this hike starts at Johns Brook Lodge and ends at ADK Loj and goes over Big Slide, Lower Wolfjaw, Upper Wolfjaw, Armstrong, Gothics, Saddleback, Basin, Haystack...

That's NOT how you say it !!!

How about the Boquet River or is it Bouquet? The maps can’t decide on the spelling. I’ve heard it pronounced bO-kA, bO-quet, and bO-ket. Back to the Tripoli Rd question. In Washington County, NY, there is a Tripoli Rd that I’ve heard the locals pronounce, trI-pOl-E road

    Lower dix range advice

Out of curiosity after ascending Hough, how do you plan to descend off the ridge? To my knowledge there is no path that leads back to the Boquet valley other than the herdpath up Grace (E. Dix). I’m not sure how thick the bushwhack is form Hough back to the Boquet. You could also continue up...

    how to shoot digital panoramics?

All good advice so far, the only thing I see that hasn’t been mentioned is to use a tripod when shooting panoramas. This ensures that the horizontal position is the same on all the pictures in the sequence (no rotation between pictures) and also reduces parallax (distortion between two pictures...

    Emergency Phone Numbers for NY

Considering the 911 dispatcher’s computers can’t even find my house, I know they’d have trouble finding me in the woods, assuming I could get enough of a signal to place an emergency phone call. Thanks for the DEC numbers.

    MSR Denali tail question

I have both the 4” & 8” tails for mine. I’ve found the 4” not to be adequate for me (170lbs with 30lb pack) in about 3’ of snow on steep terrain. I used up a lot of energy breaking trail and the shoes just didn’t seem to float, although neither did my hiking partners Tubbs. After that trip I...

    Mt Washington on Electric Grid

When that technology is finally developed, that line going up the cog could work in reverse sending power down the mountain.

    Creating views with a chainsaw

I disagree. All that is really required to hike are your two feet. But I will admit that hiking would be a lot different if we didn't have trails cut. Ever do a night hike? You have no view what so ever except for the few feet that is illuminated by a headlamp, yet they are very interesting...

    don't fear orange!

Maybe the ducks just know when you're hunting them. I've had does walk right up to almost arms reach when I'm sitting on watch, except when I have a doe tag, then I'm lucky if I see them for a split second 100 yards or more away. ;)

    don't fear orange!

Well the big difference between ducks and deer are that ducks see full color (so do geese and turkeys), where as deer can’t see reds. Blaze orange ends up looking about the same color as dead beach leaves. BTW, when I hunt I wear mostly camo, but I do wear at least one article of clothing...

    Creating views with a chainsaw

I could be wrong on this, but I believe moose prefer a more mature forest where as white tails prefer fringe areas. If you think about it this makes sense. The moose population disappeared from the Adirondacks about 100 years ago; this was also at a time when the mature forests acreage was at...

    Creating views with a chainsaw

I’m in favor of letting nature decide. As some views grow in, other new views will form as trees die and are knocked over by wind and water.
