    Water Filters?

The two best filters I’ve used are the Kataydn Hiker and the General Ecology First Need. The only ceramic filter I’ve ever used was the MSR Water Works, which didn’t impress me much. The filter was slow and had to be cleaned after almost every litter filtered; more in silty water. I’m...

    panther brook trail, ADK

Is blazing the herd paths really necessary? Other that finding the start of the Panther Brook Path off the Bradley Pond Trail (there wasn’t a caine the first time I went up) I never thought the herd paths were that hard to follow.

    Deviation between compasses.

I I find it very interesting that there is a difference of 20*. I’ve had two compasses fail over the past two years. Both needles ended up reversing, but were off by about 20*.

    VFTT Sticker spotting-Saratoga Springs, NY

Hmmm, maybe the next time I go in there, I’ll have to start shouting, “Alligator Eggs.” :D

    MacNaughton/Wallface questions

Both MacNaughton and Wallface are bushwhacks (no herd paths) from that side. Expect the trail up to Wallface Ponds to be extremely muddy, (think Bradley Pond Trail in the Santanoni’s muddy). Good luck

Is that the one that said "Panther" on it?

    panther brook trail, ADK

The path is not marked, but easy to follow. The intersection with the marked trail is approximately here. I think there is a small cairn on top of a large rock at the start of the herd path. You should be able to find water in Panther Brook for at lest half of the ascent up to Time Square. I...

    High Peaks Campgrounds, etc

What about a loop from Coreys Road? Day 1 – Hike in from Correy. Hike the Calkins Brook Truck Trail (130 in ADK Guide) to the Northville-Placid Trail near Shattuck Clearing. Camp at one of the Cold River lean-tos Day 2 – Hike up the Cold River Valley along the NPT to Duck Hole. Day 3 – Hike...

High Falls on the Oswegatchie River - Boreas Mountain - Stillwater Mountain

That area was hit very hard by the 1995 Microburst. It’s very likely that that trail was closed due to excessive blowdown. I don’t remember seeing that trail when I hiked the Dead Creek Flow, High Falls, Oswegatchie loop a few years ago. I followed the truck trail the entire way. The trail...

The Colvin bolt. No need to take a picture for me. It just gives me an excuse to climb it again and get the picture myself. :D Hmmm, I think I need to return trip to Dial for the same reason.

    Summit Benchmarks

Here's the one on Gothics http://community.webshots.com/photo/128559385/1128561056048978467kiTQvE I wish I took a picture of the one on Dix (or maybe it was on Noonmark) the other weekend. I believe it was one that was placed there during the Colvin survey (it had an 1890's date on it).

    Best Marcy Approach Trail

So far my favorite route up Marcy has been over the range trail starting in Keene Valley. At some point I want to do the Elk Lake approach, which would include Haystack and Skylight and at least a one nights stay in Panther Gorge.

    A section hike along the Northville-Placid Trail, TR - 7/14 – 7/16/06

Well I decided to take a break from the High Peaks this past weekend and take the opportunity for some seclusion with a hike through one of my favorite parts of the Adirondack Park, the West Canada Lakes Wilderness. My other objective of the weekend was to meet up with Pedxing as he thru hiked...

Bruised, Beaten, and Battered by the Dix Range, TR - July 7 – July 9, 2006

Nice panorama. I wanted to get the full 360* shot, but there's no way I was going to be able to keep my hand level with my tripod, which I had left at home.

Bruised, Beaten, and Battered by the Dix Range, TR - July 7 – July 9, 2006

Part 1 I arrived at the trailhead just before dark and was greeted by Pennsy. Lthiker had stopped there earlier, but went into town to get something to eat. I hadn’t been there 5 minutes when he rolled in. The two of them left to spot a car at St Huberts while I got some of my gear ready for...

Vermont Long Trail – Brandon Gap to Lincoln Gap: July 1 – July 3, 2006

Part 2 We woke up early Monday morning. The sun was out and the air was cool. We drank some coffee and were on the trail before 6. Over the year we have grown fond of getting on the trail early when hiking in the summer. The bulk of our hiking ends up before the temperatures get real hot and...

Vermont Long Trail – Brandon Gap to Lincoln Gap: July 1 – July 3, 2006

Part 1 Question: What does a native (or is that naive) Adirondacker do when recent rains mean there will be too much mud and muck in the Adirondacks to go backpacking? Answer: He goes hiking in Vermont to do a section of the Long Trail, because everyone knows the Long Trail is always dry and...

    Vermont Trail Conditions

Does anyone know what the trail conditions in Vermont are like right now? The trail conditions section doesn’t have anything after the last big rains that came through the Northeast. Specifically I’m wondering what the conditions are on the Long Trail between Brandon Gap and Smuggler’s Notch...
