    Black Fly Season

I'm the same way, but I hate all the extra gear and weight I have to carry to hike in the winter. Maybe that's why I like hiking in early fall so much; I can basically carry a summer load and don't have any bugs to contend with.

    Black Fly Season

I agree. Deerflies are by far the worst. DEET does nothing but add a little seasoning to their meal.

    Black Fly Season

I've been getting swarmed for the past two days just south of the Adirondack blue line. They haven't started biting yet.

    Devil’s Path 04/07/06 – 04/09/06 TR

Thanks for the corrections Mark Schaefer. I actually forgot which summit I took the pictures from. This was only my third trip the Catskills, so I'm not as familiar with the mountains as I am with the Adirondacks.

    Devil’s Path 04/07/06 – 04/09/06 TR

The Basshole Creek Boys hike the Devil’s Path Pictures The 4 of us met up at the New Baltimore rest area on the thruway on a rainy Friday afternoon. After eating a dinner of nasty hamburgers we were on our way to the Catskills. We spotted a car at Spruceton Road and then drove over to the...

Have you ever been attacked by a dog?

A dog has bitten me twice. Once by a Miniature Schnauzer and once by a Turkish Shepard the Schnauzer was much more vicious. Both times were not in the backcountry. The only negative experience I ever had with a dog while hiking was while hiking the Northville Placid Trail. A loose dog lunged...

    Handguns on the trail

No, I don’t carry a gun with me into the back county, except when I go hunting. I did camp with someone once that brought a handgun and it was a non-issue.

Dix from 73 via the slide

It can be done in summer. My first high peak was Dix via that slide. The climb up was exhilarating and terrifying at times. It was a trip I’ll never forget.

    Boots...I need a new pair!

I bought a pair of these boots for winter hiking. Something to keep in mind is that the sole is completely ridged which makes them a little awkward to hike in until you get use to them. The first few hikes I did with them after about 8 to 10 miles I would experience severe pain on the ball of...

    hiking in mud season

True, but “Mud Season” has a much better ring to it than “Excessive Erosion Season.”

How many peaks did you climb this past winter?

I’m doing well for spring. So far, I’ve hiked 5 named peaks.

How many peaks did you climb this past winter?

Just 1, Street Mountain on New Years Eve, which was also the only new ADK 46’er I hiked in 2005. Things have been so busy, that winter just flew by me.

    Ever Been Rescued?

Does getting a ride down the mountain from the ski patrol count? :D If so than yes, I was rescued once when I broke my arm snowboarding. Other than that I've never had to be rescued or spend an unexpected night in the woods. I had one trip a few years ago come pretty close. My hiking...

    Abandoned Hikers, a new trend?

When you find out let me know. I've had some luck with showing elevation profiles, but that doesn't work all of the time.

Crossing IPB @ this time of year

A bit off topic As a side note, I’ve found it useful to refer to the Indian Pass Brooks as Indian Pass Brook Hudson and Indian Pass Brook Ausable or Tahawus side and Heart Lake side. The brooks become very confusing especially since the same trail (Indian Pass Trail) crosses both.
