RMC Log Cabin Shelter on Lowes path closure

I find in general that Lowes is a lovely trail from start to finish. Once you get above the hut, the trail becomes epic almost immediately, and as you mentioned, down below it is quite pleasant. When I was younger and living in Boston, each winter we would hike up early, reserve mattresses, go...

    Outdoor movie thread

"Fire Lines" A nice little 40 minute movie by Patagonia about a community in northern California wracked by forest fires. The area has mountain bike trails, and the film ostensibly centers on how trails can bring a community together. There is also a subtext to the movie about fatherhood. My...

I have all the gear I need

I just got notice of a "end of season 40% off sale" and I scrolled through, but I'm finding myself in the nice place of having all the gear I need. I don't need a new tent (bought a Big Agnes in 2017, and it's dirty and looks ancient but is still holding up.) All the backpacks I need. There...

My condolences to his family and those on this list who were close to him. 8,639 posts on Views! 365 * 25 = 9,125. Close to a post a day, every day, for a quarter century! Sometimes peakbagger would start a thread just to get people to write something, which was always amusing. He would...

    Burgeon Outdoor Brand

Thank you for writing this. I do my best to shop as much as possible from 1% for the Planet companies, the most famous of which is Patagonia. One can go to their website: https://www.patagonia.com/our-footprint/ and delve deeply into where they do business, their materials and...

    Magalloway

I feel a great amount of guilt that people are making that massive drive for that tiny hike. How much carbon are we putting in the air for something that short. It's a nice hike, but tiny. I wish they would take it off the list and replace it with something to the south.

Local Climber Dies in Gym Fall

Gym accidents are so rare they are virtually non-existent. Climbing in a gym is not dangerous.

Local Climber Dies in Gym Fall

It is bizarre beyond belief. Climbing in a gym is not dangerous, because one has to be roped at all times. If this person was route-setting, there is an elaborate system of self-belaying one is supposed to follow, and it should be fail proof. Something went catastrophically wrong.

    Winter Trail Running and Negligence

I took some time off last week and backpacked with a friend up the Garfield Ridge Trail to the campsite, then over Guyot, and finally down over the Bonds. While waiting for my buddy at Lincoln Woods to spot cars, a young woman came up to the car parked next to mine. Late 20s / early 30s...

    Fatality on Mt. Guyot

If this young man had set up a tent, warmed up water and ate dinner, and got into his -20 bag, he quite likely would be alive today. I do believe there is rhyme and reason to survival, and it has little to do with a "will to survive" and everything to do with carrying the gear you need to get...
