The changing innovations of what we do for fun

I am going to double-dip and say that I also think rain jackets still have a great deal of room for improvement. They still don't breathe well, and we all know the experience of being out in the summer and wishing jackets were not so warm. They also don't yet last long enough in a downpour...

The changing innovations of what we do for fun

For me, it's the ability to take good photos without having to bring a large camera with film in it with me. I've never taken (or been in) a selfie in my life, but I love capturing the beauty of what I see. Every half hour, a new photo comes up on my computer's background, and that gives me...

The changing innovations of what we do for fun

Backpacker Magazine asked three folks in the ultralight world about innovations. https://www.backpacker.com/gear/the-future-of-ultralight-backpacking/ Okay, put the ultralight part aside. As I prepare for a two-week trip on the Continental Divide Trail this summer, my mind has been on gear a...

How do we keep folks from hiking Saturday?

I wrote this in an earlier thread (https://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?54388-Will-You-Buy-a-NH-HikeSafe-Card/page3&highlight=recklessness): # # # "Negligence" in the abstract is the failure to exercise the level of care or caution that is expected of a reasonable person. Typically, when...

How do we keep folks from hiking Saturday?

Certainly the standard for negligence would have changed on Saturday, had someone been in need of a rescue.

    Caps ridge in Winter

Building off of Dr. D's comments, the problem we encountered was that the trail was not broken out, nor was the Boundary Line Trail or the Jefferson Notch Rd, and we didn't have a lot of snow! My feet sank with every step on the road, or my microspikes dragged on the top of the snow, and it...

    Caps ridge in Winter

Monday night, I checked the MWOB high peaks forecast, and it wasn't great: Winds around 65mph, but decreasing over the day. I got up at 2am, departing Middletown, CT just after 3am, and the four hour drive was uneventful. I can go up either I-91 or I-84/20/290/I-93, and opted for the latter...

    Caps ridge in Winter

One more stupid question, is Boundary Line a blazed trail? Is it easy to follow if there's unbroken snow on the ground?

    Caps ridge in Winter

That's a rather big problem for someone like me hiking solo on a windy day when there was fresh snow! I may take a compass bearing on the way up. I hate to say it, but it might also be a good day to have AllTrails on.

    Caps ridge in Winter

I may try tomorrow, Tuesday, January 17. Only a few inches on the ground, highs in the mid-30 at ground levels, "above seasonal" (according to the Observatory) at higher elevations. The wind forecast for the Observatory is a very odd thing. The forecast says one thing, and then hikers on NETC...

    Caps ridge in Winter

A friend asked me if anyone ever hikes the road and does Caps Ridge in winter. I didn't know the answer! Caps Ridge, while short, isn't easy in the summer. I'm not a big fan of the scrambling, and I'm not sure why one would do it in winter. Seems rather risky. The reply was that it...

    Another Falling Waters Loop Fatality

A friend and I hiked the loop on Monday, January 2, 2023. Saw tons of well-equipped folks. Then a guy with no hat(!) who said he got turned around on Lafayette, a young man in a sweatshirt, folks at the huyt trying to de-thaw their water tubes, and a shocking number of people with tiny little...

    Another Falling Waters Loop Fatality

I'm sorry, but I have been on this list for two decades now, and for two decades solo hikers have denied the simple fact that hiking with others is safer than hiking alone. It leads to better decision making, to the ability of another to catch an error, or to spot hypothermia, or to aid someone...

    Grid Finishers 2022

When I first joined Views, the competitive hikers had this thing where they sought to see who could hike the 48 the fastest into the new year. I don't know if it was true or not, but I was told they had support crews who would pick them up at trailheads and drive them to the next one. The...

    Sled/Polk Trails

The ironic thing about this question is not that there aren't trails, but rather there are tons of them--they are just almost all used by snow mobiles. Otherwise, the Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail would be perfect for your needs.

Time to get rid of the NEHH

I remember at some point, deep in the past of Views, someone either asked or posted a link for a gps track, and got a "we don't do that here" response. Well, the twenty of us (if it's even that many) who still post regularly are in the minority. I take solace that people don't post selfies...
