Food Storage in the Green Mountain National Forest

The US Forest Service issued a Food Storage order for the Green Mountain National Forest about a month ago that requires food to be stored in vehicles, suspended 12 ft above the ground and at least 6 ft horizontal from any object, or use of bear box or bear canisters. I only learned through a...

    Hiking / outdoor ‘learning experiences’

When my girls were younger, I took them snowshoeing on the trails around French Ledges in Plainfield. I thought it was best to leave the pup in the station wagon while I help them put on their snowshoes. The pup jumped over the rear seat into the trunk area when I open the rear hatch to get...

    Mosquito Netting For Tarp Camping

Are you thinking of a setup similar to the Nemo bugouts which were tarps with attached netting on the sides? I believe that had three sizes. I believe that 12x12 and 9x9 were more vehicle camping but their 7x7 was for remote camping. Not sure if they are still made.

    Coyote attack in Vermont

We also had the Bobcat attack back in December. I would assume that both incidences would be a rare occurrence. vtdigger.org/2018/12/13/bobcat-bit-two-people-tests-positive-rabies/

Balsams Update - Go Big or Go home

No comment on if they will be installing border crossing on the Long Trail once you cross into and out off Canada. The bushwack over to Big Jay could be interesting since you would likely be crossing the border at a non-designated crossing.

    MSR Snowshoe Repair

My MSR Lighting Ascent failed or should I say finally failed based on numerous prior reports. The metal cross bar that holds the crampon and binding to the shoe broke at one of the rivet points (MSR called it a retainer). Given their age (stamped 11/09 on the bottom side of the plastic...

    POLL: Your longest day?

17.5 hours on the Cross Rivendell Trail. Hiked in late July to take advantage of the long daylight hours. We started at Flag Pole Hill in Vershire, VT at sunrise and wanted to finish on Mount Cube in Orford, NH at sunset. We missed the official sunset time by around 30 minutes. Coming back...

"Live" Rescue On Facebook: Hiker Lost On Lafayette

There was a comment on the use of wands earlier in the thread. I have only used wands a couple of times. Mostly before I carried a smart phone with access to a program such as Gaia or a website such as Caltopo or had a GPS with downloaded contours or trail maps. At that time I carried a map...

    Vermont 4ks In Winter

To add controversy to the number of Vermont peaks above 4,000 feet. Cutts Peak south of Mount Ellen is 4,022 feet. (don't think it has the prominence) Stratton Mountain is 3,936 feet plus the 70 foot climb up the fire tower puts us above 4,000 feet. So Vermont has 4 to 8 peaks above 4,000...

    Vermont 4ks In Winter

Access to and finding parking can be an issue at our trailheads during the winter. You may find the parking area for the Bucklin trail (Killington) or that the road side parking for the Battell trail (Abraham) and the Jerusalem trail (Ellen) may not have been recently plowed. You may want to...

Stupid Question On Lighting Canister Stoves

We did try a MSR Piezo Igniter for a short time but found that it was not reliable, especially in damp and wet weather. They are a handheld piezo lighter for stoves that did not come equipped with a piezo lighter.

Stupid Question On Lighting Canister Stoves

I use a fire steel to light my canister stove and found it works well. Have not burnt off any hair or had a fireball. It does take some practice/coordination to turn stove on and have fire steel ready to use with two hands. I am comfortable lighting the stove this way. My wife is not. If...

Mount Ascutney Name Change Poll Results

The Town of Windsor, VT received a notice from the Vermont Board of Libraries that they would be considering, at their July 17th meeting, a petitioned request to change the name of Mt. Ascutney to Kaskadenak. The 3,144 monadnock has been called many things over the centuries; Ascutegnik...

    Vermont Camping Next Few Weeks

Vermont State Parks offer flush toilets, hot showers (as long as you have quarters), and drinking water. The Forest Service campgrounds Moosaloo, Chittenden and Silver Lake offer non of those luxury items. Moosaloo I believe has hand pump for drinking water. Silver Lake has a 1/2 mile road...
