    Any hikers carry IceScrews?

Thanks Tom! I am always looking for good mountaineering books to read. Thanks for the recommendation! I realize that my thought was to use an ice screw in an unconventional method. After climbing Saddleback from many different approaches, my dilema is that I want to descend from Basin to...

    Any hikers carry IceScrews?

Scooby on Saddleback's Ledge ooooooh that ledge is just a pain, like cushetunk says!! I am not talking about the standard route up the cliffs of Saddleback but the side route with that nasty little ledge. My hope was just a little something to give me a bit of additional height to hoist myself...

    Any hikers carry IceScrews?

I guess I should explain better The route is snow until a relatively small ledge that has a thin crust of ice. The ledge has a slope with marginal ice/snow . There is typically not enough ice to cut steps or use front points. Probably a peice of rock climbing protection would really be more...

    Any hikers carry IceScrews?

It's a one way route Thanks for the reply, cushetunk! I had crampons and an ice ax, but the step I needed to make was just a weeeeeeeee bit too big. Of course I would use the crampons and ax still, I just needed to fabricate a secure point to anchor off to get the necessary boost. Did you...

    Any hikers carry IceScrews?

Last year I ran into a bit of trouble while attempting to climb Saddleback from Basin. (Fortunately a couple of strong men were not far behind and assisted me up the icy ledge!! :D Thanks again!) This year I expect that the ice has set in even earlier and I hope to succeed again in summitting...

    They'll never see me sleeping!

great deal and looks cool! What does it weigh? Just curious. I may be interested since my bivy has poles for headspace (and weighs a couple pounds). I have the same thing going on when I use my regular sleeping bag, instead of my winter bag, with the bivy that I also bought on ebay...

Santanoni New/Old Trail - Official Name

Other pointers In the past I used a bridge as a reference and an old "Posted Sign", but didn't notice the frame of the sign this time (although I was told that it is still there high in a tree looking back toward the road). The bridge I am referring to is one of those w/ stringers...

Santanoni New/Old Trail - Official Name

As of 11/5/07 There was a cairn marking the start of the N.O. Path as it leaves the Bradley Pond trail. It was a small cairn that will soon be covered by snow, as it already had a sweet covering when I passed by.

    Kahtoola-MICROspikes vs STABILicers

Kahtoolas! I have the Kahtoola running crampon and they are wonderfully made. So I'm thinking that their latest product would be a good investment also. More info on someone's experience would cinch this purchase for me too! The Icer's that I currently use, and have a couple pairs of, are...

    Meals Ready to Eat

Hot tea and scones BlackSpruce - I really enjoy my hot tea w/ fresh scones or fresh bread and goat cheese, please! Chip - Thanks for the info, where can these be purchased? Have you eaten one of these thing-a-ma-jigs?! I don't believe this is what I had, but it sounds like a neat replacement...

    Meals Ready to Eat

Yes!! Recently I had the fine fortune of experiencing the delightful cooking and companionship of a chef/guide. It was absolutely wonderful! But being spoiled by such exquisite dining while in the wilderness, I cannot choke down my usual cold oatmeal for winter trips and must at least have...

    Meals Ready to Eat

A bunch of years ago I greatly enjoyed a winter trip complemented with a hot meal ready when we just pulled the string. While at EMS today I learned that they no longer sell these. Does anyone know where I can get one of these "pull the string" for a steaming hot meal? Thanks for any info on...

    Why is it…?

That reminds me of when... I was jogging along on the trail by Lake MarieLoiuse and heard this huffing and puffing coming from the woods I was about to enter. It was blueberry season, so when I saw a large black animal coming charging toward me, I let out a blood curdling screeeeeeeeeeeam...
