    Moose Warning

I'm a native of Woodstock. Good to see moose down in that area. I always thought that the Bigelow Hollow-Yale Forest area was good habitat for them. The biggest problem for them of course is crossing the Mass Pike and then 84!

    Status of NH Rt. 113

Thanks, I do have the gazetteer and I think maybe I can figure it out. :o

    Status of NH Rt. 113

Rt 113 is closed between Chocorua and Tamworth. Makes the trip to Ferncroft a lot longer. Does anyone have any info on how long it will be closed? NH DOT website was no help at all!

    Snow-free hikes?

Cardigan is about 90% snow free but the 10% is inconsequential. Carr Mtn still has snow above the spruce line but 5 of the 12 people hiking it today, including me, were bare booting it with little trouble. 2 of the barebooters came over from the Warren side.

    Dixville Peak (3490') and Monadnock (3148'): 4/21/07

I think you mixed up our Monadnocks. We did the Vermont one right outside Colebrook.

Vermont: NY Times article on Mad River Glen

Thanks for sharing this, PB. My grandparents built one of the ski lodges just down the road from this so my father started skiing at MRG at age 8 and practically lived on the slopes. I never skiied there so I was allowed to drift into more questionable pursuits such as bushwhacking, etc... Jim

How many New England 3ks have you done?

"Moose in Training" = 142 ME- 84 NH- 30 VT- 27 MA- 1 I thought I was going to finish the Maine peaks first but much of NH is closer with a lot of trailed peaks I have not yet done. Great thread!

    2006 Recap

My highlight of the year was meeting people from this group for the first time. Bumping into mhrsebago out of the blue at Monument 450 Peak of all places! Spending an enjoyable Saturday with dms and JimC and just experiencing their combined wealth of knowledge. Being given the grand tour of...

    NEng 3k Finishers

Thanks Roy for clearing that up for me. I just missed Tillotson when I hiked by on the Long Trail but I doubt I would have thought to check out both humps. I do remember a side trail that comes out by Tillotson camp. I look forward to checking out that drafty old place again. :D

    NEng 3k Finishers

Raymond, that is the list I have. The 2 extra peaks seem to be Guyot which I've done and Tillotson which I haven't. The last peak with a K by it is Bromley at 3281' Jim

    NEng 3k Finishers

    1. 451 or 453 depending on which "list" you have 2. One of the finishers can probably answer this 3. Maine is generally considered the toughest It will be interesting to see other peoples answers on this. Jim

    Middle and South Redington 9/17/06

Unless the road is icy you might get all the way to the AT crossing although the last .5 mile is pretty rough. That is if Maine's balmy December continues. If it snows don't expect the road to be plowed past the house on the right just after you turn right at the 4-way intersection. Otherwise...

    Climate Change in the Northeast

ROFLMAO Yes, those of us out on Sunday at 3600' plus, in one layer, in far NW Maine, in November were sure upset about the 50 degree temperatures, sunshine and no wind. We were sitting around wishing for a gray, damp 35 degree day with a stiff north wind so we could put on all our layers upon...

"How I Spent my Columbus Day Weekend" by Little Natie Bushwhacker

Thank You for this. Since all the people I have met on this site have already done these peaks I expect to be plodding my way to the top of these alone. Knowing it can be done gives me encouragement. Have you done Barren yet? and if not would you like to plan a trip to it next year? Let me...

    More Beaudry Bushwhacks

Not the same place. The cabin is north of there alongside a small stream just South of the Merrill Strip Road. There was a lot of firewood neatly stacked in a shed behind the cabin and the obligatory outhouse off to the side away from the stream.

    More Beaudry Bushwhacks

I keep wondering where Van Dyke got its name. Was it named after Dick or Jerry? :D Note to Papa Bear: we found an object that you would be interested in on top of Van Dyke. Can't remember exactly what it said and Kurt didn't get a picture so I guess you'll have to go check it out for yourself...

Columbus weekend in the Great North Woods

Not too close of a call. I was wearing an Orange hat and vest when I crested the hill. The father in the blind saw me first and radioed his son. They had walkie talkies or something. Moose count: 4 between Grafton Notch and Errol. This was between 3 and 4 AM and yes I was going pretty slow thru...

Columbus weekend in the Great North Woods

I will just add that on top of Rump were not 1, not 2, but 3 jars hanging on a tree. One was broken, another had water in it and the real one had a few notes but only 2 names I recognized:Jim C. and Narcisso Torres. A few hardy souls mentioned climbing the ledges from the East. Saturday...

    Border Swath Maintenance

So maybe it was the Canadians who "maintained" the section between Mon. 473 and 471 but left all the slash in the middle of the swath?
