    GPS shopping

So, we are shopping for a new GPS. We have an older Garmin and were wondering if the new ones are easier to use and have a longer battery life? Our main concerns are: Easy to use Withstands extreme cold and heat Battery life Durable Reliable (good reception) can be used with mapping software...

How much do you really drink on a winter hike?

When we were in Alaska we drank tons more. We took a course and our guides were adament on 2 hot drinks with each meal and several liters of water during the day. Makes you pee a lot but it works very well. When I go out west I drink a lot more to prevent altitude issues.

How much do you really drink on a winter hike?

I usually shoot for 2 full nalgenes during the day (usually get lazy and only drink 1-1 1/2) Then have 16oz of hot tea with dinner and fill a nalgene with tea to drink at night if I wake up. In the morning I down another 16oz of hot tea. I tend to drink more in the summer, but it is more...

    Pemi Loop Jan 24

The sleds were great on the flat sections but the uphill and downhills were tough. They also added too much weight to our packs. We will not use them next time, but it was really cool to try them! Nice to meet you guys! Hope your hike was great too!!!!! :)

    Pemi Loop Jan 24

Nice to meet you too! I think we did. Is that where you can go off to the right (when ascending) and get the nice view? If it was then we did! It was such a pretty day and if it weren't for the bitter cold and high winds we would have loved to eat lunch on the summit! :) Great views of...

    Presi traverse January 24th

It was unfortunate that is was so cold and windy because the visibility was unbelievable! We bailed on our trip too. We got up to Bondcliff and it was so darn cold and windy that we turned back. The forecast called for even colder temps the next day and I was not looking forward to a day on...

    Pemi Loop Jan 24

Well, we made an effort at the Pemi loop, but we made some mistakes and need to regroup and come up with a better plan. We had a blast. Saturday we hiked up and ran into a bunch of people from this forum! You were all so nice! :) Anyway, mistake #1 was that we decided to "experiment" with...

I can hold it! Don't worry, I have a restop 2 and a pee funnel and pee bottle. I will not leave brown trail markers behind.

    Presi traverse January 24th

Marcs escape routes are awesome! They made our winter traverse last year much easier when we got stuck in a whiteout. Bring them with you, you won't be dissapointed. We used crampons almost the whole way above treeline. The snow was really deep at Pierce and we had trouble finding the trail...

    Pemi Loop Jan 24

I am excited! It seems like there will be some signs of life on our adventure! It is always fun to run into people on the trail! We are definately bringing snowshoes and got the extension tails too! If the skies stay clear it should be a beautiful hike whether we finish or not! :)

    Pemi Loop Jan 24

Wow! One winter day! That is impressive! Navigation is definately the toughest part. We have been in snow so deep the trees and trail markers were buried! We plan to give it a safe try, but have already accepted that we may have to bail at some point. The conditions are our biggest...

    Pemi Loop Jan 24

We are planning on it being very difficult. We are planning to do it in 3 days and packing enough food for 4. Right now we are not even sure if we will make it but worst case we will hike to Bond, camp, and hike out. I am expecting things to be extremely challenging with very deep snow...

We are planning to start by heading up to Bond and finishing with the Flume. It is about 32 miles. We did a practice run this summer in the clockwise direction.

Hi! I am planning to attempt the Pemi loop in the counter clockwise direction on January 24th. I was wondering if anyone had any advice, pointers, or wanted to go with us. If anyone has any updates on conditions after this most recent snowfall let me know! -Kristina :)
