    Kearsarge North

Last year we did it in the winter, it's a great winter hike.

    Kearsarge North

Me and my dog made his 4th ascent of this fine peak. It's really an enjoyable climb, although the eroded section in the first mile is not very pleasant. In regards to the thread on blazes, wow is this trail blazed, they are old mind you, but they are plentiful to say the least. The ledges...

    Winter Backpacking Boots

I wear and swear by Oboz Bridgers the 10" 400gram model. I do not overnight though, if I did, they would be in my bag with me.

    AMC sign Auction

The AMC sign Auction is now taking place. I believe Peakbagger used to keep us up to date on this annual event. Once again, the signs are going for high dollars. Some pretty nice signs this year. https://www.outdoors.org/get-involved/trail-maintenance/annual-trail-sign-auction/

New Mesonet Weather Sites on West Side of Washington

That is a very good point about that being their approach. Still, having sites on the west side should really improve the forecast models.

New Mesonet Weather Sites on West Side of Washington

It seems odd this is just happening. Why just monitor the east side? everyone knows the weather comes from the west.

    The status of blazing?

I love Sabbaday Brook trail and have done it in the Fall, it can make you stop and think, but it's a fairly easy route to follow. You should have got out by daylight, you cant blame the trail for poor planning. As much as I like and approve of good blazing, I support the Wilderness standard 100%.

New gate on the trail bridge.

Thanks Josh, I hadn't thought of that possibility.

New gate on the trail bridge.

Hopefully Dave Metsky can enlighten me or anybody else as to why this gate was added to this bridge. I can only guess to keep wildlife from getting to the lodge, but even that seems questionable.

    The status of blazing?

I see the point you are trying to make and that could be a healthy (or not) debate on its own as to whether we should mark trails at all. Personally, I think if you're going to cut a trail through the woods with the intent on it being used for travel, you need to maintain it and mark it for...

    The status of blazing?

I like the sound of the markers in the ADK. One method of blazing or markers I have seen and always thought was very helpful was color coding trails. You get to a junction and it's easy to follow the correct color. The Belknap's use that system and I always thought it was efficient. The Belknap...

    The status of blazing?

I like cross country travel out west, but it's a different animal altogether. I know in CA, I had to do some major adjusting to my hiking with the minimal use of any trail markers, a two rock cairn was like gold. IN CO, some of the use trails would fade away only to be picked up later. But the...

    Outdoor movie thread

"Fall". I recently had this movie come up on my Dish Network and I recorded it to watch later. Well later came and I watched it start to finish. I found it to be very entertaining, it kept me engaged and the end was quite surprising, and my personal opinion is that it's worth watching. The...

    The status of blazing?

I have a random observation and if I'm off base then it's me. As I have been hiking last few years, primarily the 52wav, I have noticed that blazes in general are not so great to downright poor. I know blazing can be a contentious subject, my point here is not necessarily to debate that, but to...

USFS Campsites on Cherry Mountain Road

I never cared for them because they are not cared for like a real campground. Not to mention any yahoo can show up and you are on your own. A few years back, tents and gear were stolen from the Gale river road sites while people were off hiking.

AT trail damage from Hurricane Helene

Volunteers can be more of a liability than they are worth. Not that they are not needed, but from the article, it will take professionals to move a lot of the trees. The last thing they need down there is unskilled volunteers getting hurt and putting additional strain on local resources. With...
