Iodine (Potable Aqua) vs. Chlorine Dioxide (Aquamira)

filter bottle? How about as an alternative to a normal filter, one of the filter within a bottle types like the Katatyn?

Iodine (Potable Aqua) vs. Chlorine Dioxide (Aquamira)

I use a filter for multi-day outings but desiring chem backup for day trips if carried water ran out. How does one decide between the two listed in the title? Are there any particular Adirondack parasites (tape worm) or bacteria that these might not be effective on?

    Big Slide trail?

The DEC website still lists High Peaks snow at 3,000 feet and above. Those who recently climbed Big Slide, is there some snow or ice on the summit approach still from the Brothers? (strangely-I'm sort of torn between this one with great open views much of the way and the exact opposite, a...

    Camelbak in-line water filters

That will work. Thanks. But then I'll end up having to ponder the UV pens as well.

    Camelbak in-line water filters

If one uses any pumping filter and runs the clean water outflow tube inside a hydration bladder without a large stopper, I suppose there is risk of contaminated water running along the outside of the tube and into the bladder. But a screw in top for the bladder can not be found by my search.

    Camelbak in-line water filters

While Steripens, MSR and Katadyn products, and chemicals are all popular for treating water, these are all practical for those who use water bottles vs. hydration bladders. For those who prefer bladders such as Camelbak, does anyone use and can comment on the Camelbak inline filter that filters...

    noonmark condition?

I climbed adjacent Round Mt. today so perhaps similar. First half of trail - no snow and dry. Third quarter - 1 -3 inches of wet slush snow. Final quarter - 3 to 5 inches of wet snow. Summit dry. Too warm for ice but still slippery on way down on wet rocks with leaves under snow. Microspikes...

Alpine wildflower thread - Adirondack Peaks

I own the little pocket guide about Adirondack alpine flowering plants and shrubs, but it does not give much insight into the speciific peaks of what grows where. I assume that Marcy, Algonwuin, Wright, and Colden have the majority of the true arctic species but many other peaks have alpine...

Got it. Will do something else.

    Phelps soon

I'd love to climb Phelps soon but assume that both the DEC spring trails to avoid (not sure this is one) and the washed-out bridge make it an iffy destination right now. Without someone being there recently, impossible to know what the water level is. If this is not a good one for now, Big...

Rocky Peak Ridge (+ Giant) from New Russia.

Bald only? Neil, If available time or effort are less than the full hike to RPR, is it a satisfying shorter hike to go only to the Bald Mountain summit? Are views of Rocky Peak Ridge itself good from Bald? Thanks.

    blue mtn conditions

Anyone drive from home with their snowshoes or crampons on, to avoid having to put them on at the trailhead? (except Toyota owners)?

    blue mtn conditions

hmmm wearing your traction devices or crampons on snowless iceless trails of rock and dirt unril you get to such conditions? . . . . about the same as wearing snowshoes on snowless ground. Tremedous wear and tear on your devices unnecessarily and probably very dangerous on the roots.

care to discuss your winter day/climbing pack ?

Eiger 35 I can add my positives on my Marmot Eiger 35. I am thrilled how great the load transfer is onto the hips with this pack. I just used it up Giant and carried my snowshoes, crampons, down jacket, and lots of pounds of winter gear and felt zero weight on my shoulders. I was very nervous...

    Alternative to Fleece Jacket?

primaloft The best fleece alternative I have is an REI brand hooded ultralight primaloft jacket with thin pertex exterior. It is lighter than any of my fleece layers, my Montbell down jacket, etc. and packs tiny. I have used it as both a midlayer to actually hike in when real cold and as a...

Weekend backpacks and lower back issues

Deuter Maddy, have you looked at any larger Deuter packs. For a weekend, I had a volume of around 3,000 ci in mind.

ok sorry, did not intend to start a huge debate. I should have only posted the question on safety on the trail.

    Dealing with postholes and holers

Dealing with postholes and p-holers The weekend warm temps will surely bring out large crowds to the trails this weekend. Trip reports have indicated many post-holes on the trails and no doubt, there will be many without snowshoes creating new postholes in the soft snow. It seems that there...

Weekend backpacks and lower back issues

these 2 With light-weight (but I guess not Ul) in mind, I have placed these 2 at the top of list to consider - the GG Vapor Trail and the Osprey Exos 46 (smaller than 58). One thing I need to find out for both on these for weekend trips, will a bear cannister fit? I had the Gregory Z55 on the...
