    RIP Paradox :(

I am very saddened to learn the news of John's premature passing. John was a friend of all things hiking and that included the ADK High Peaks Foundation to which he made generous donations. I will never forget when he learned of my and Glen Bladholm's (mastergrasshopper) attempt of a Pemi loop...

    Is Bushwhacking for you ??

I think there would have to be a lot of people doing the peaks for (obvious?) herd paths to develop. I have a favorite bushwhack that follows a broad ridge and have done it many times over the past 10-12 years. There is an incipient herd path that is intermittent and I often lose it or it just...

    Is Bushwhacking for you ??

Doesn't strike me as reckless but I'm obviously biased and am not deciding anything. Ie. Who knows, a lawyer working for an accident insurance company would be paid to save the company money and might try and argue that if you had to take all those precautions then it must be a dangerous...

    Is Bushwhacking for you ??

I don't understand why the mention of bushwhacking always results in anti-GPS posts. Bushwhacking and map and compass navigation can be dissociated. I have worked hard at developing and honing map and compass skills and I see the Nav part of bushwhacking as being a separate experience. The...

    Is Bushwhacking for you ??

Add an altimeter to the map and compass and you can almost always pin-point your position on the map. Takes practice and maintenance though. Would solo bushwhacking (with no GPS) be considered reckless in NH?

    Neil Luckhurst Project 100

Project -100 finished successfully on Kilburn Sunday March 18th, my 62nd birthday. And what a day that was!

    Neil Luckhurst Project 100

Latest blog post. We got our money's worth on Haystack-Basin and Saddleback. Doing Allen I had a mishap crossing Skylight brook on my way out.

    Neil Luckhurst Project 100

Checking the stats on the blog I noticed some hits from VFTT. Indeed, the no fund raising policy is why I haven't linked to the blog from here. However, I suspect that precluding any shills then no one would mind if I was "raising awareness" about the project itself. It's a bear of a project...

Castellated Ridge. White and slick. Then Mad-Adams.

27th/28th it was. I could have/should have included the dates in my TR.

Castellated Ridge. White and slick. Then Mad-Adams.

First TR here in a while! I finally made it back to the Whites. Took me 4h30 to drive to Barnes Field where I set up a tent. Then I took the Pinkham B shortcut road back to Rte 2 and geared up for a hike I've been wanting to do for years: Castellated Ridge to Jefferson. The upper elevations...

Camping fee payment method at Barnes Field.

I plan 2 nights at BF this weekend and was wondering how the camping fees are collected. Ie. should I bring cash? Thanks!

On MYCCR someone posted this link in response to my query there.

    Any geologists in the house?

I came across this cracked open boulder while ascending a brook in the Macintyre Range. Any thoughts as to what sort of rock this is and what cooling history would result in it? http://adkhighpeaks.com/neil/outdoor%20pursuits/avy-macs_2016/Avy-mac_0044.html

    Pace, Intervals And Rest

My MO (FWIW): Exit vehicle garbed in a base layer shirt and an eVent jacket. Thin belaclava and wool miits inside a shell mitt. My base layer, no matter how cold it is will absorb moisture. I can have cold everything (hands, head etc.) and still sweat. I eschew soft shells and things that have...

    Pace, Intervals And Rest

I agree about someone going out and booting it up one NE peak. And, if you're young enough you can cruise on youth and feel like sh!t tomorrow! But, a lot depends on what's big or small to the hiker and how good one wants to feel during and after. For 10-12 plus hour hikes stringing...

    Pace, Intervals And Rest

Best book ever if you want to up your game. It's written for alpinists but it extrapolates for hiking very well. Bottom line IMO for hiking: build aerobic power, especially in the quadraceps muslces! Building a big aerobic base takes months and months of dedicated and intelligent work. You...

Lyon Mtn ADK, South Peak 3,365 - Approach?

We did Averill South years ago when the Nature Conservancy turned the land over to the state. We went in from Standish road in a more or less east-northeasterly direction. Except for a short distance in from the road we saw no traces of old trails. However, it was in winter conditions. Using...

    Toughest 3000'ers in ADKs?

I went up Sentinel twice this summer. I think I have the route wired now! Near the end we went up onto the summit ridge too soon and encountered nearly impregnable thickets so we dropped off a small cliff and walked through open woods for a spell and when we went back up onto the ridge it was...
